Good luck with that. Keep us informed of the first few classes back with posts, might make interesting reading.

what stretches can i do so i dont strain my groin on the high kicks

what fitness exercises can i do to make sure i last a good 3 minute round

    ect ect ect

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,198 ✭✭✭Baldie

Didn't get off to a good start.

I'm coming down with a bit of a cold (the missus has a chest infection, so I probably caught that off her) and the weather wasn't the warmest last night so I said I'd give it a miss (for the good of my health)!

    Sorry all...:(

Your instructor should look after those issue's.

Where are you thinking of training?.

not sure where.... tryin to sort myself a normal job to leave nights free for training first. some places dont do mornings?

two options. a guy around my area comes very highly recomended by 100% if the poeple ive asked so he does one on one training.

or the little fella does his thing down in Roper's place. so i could maybe slot in with the pro's (ie, the deep end) down there twice a week and see if i come out swimming.

    :D

Who is this?^ Anyway, no fear of any of us being pros! Most people in the class right now have less than a year training.

    don't do high kicks?

    That's not really a stretch.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,639 ✭✭✭john kavanagh

not 'really' a stretch? its not a stretch, its a solution. not everybody built for high kicks.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,923 ✭✭✭Nothingcompares

Exactly, but it's fair to say if Package wants to do high kicks and they're an important part of his syllabus (perhaps he's a WTF guy) then he should do exercises the help you do high kicks.

If I asked Eddie Bravo how to improve my flexibility to use rubber guard would be say "Don't use rubber guard?". He might say, get a good closed guard and butterfly and think about Rubber guard down the way, or he may just say, "I've a chapter in my book on it, go read it".

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,639 ✭✭✭john kavanagh

...and rubber guard is DEFINEATLY not for everybody. i've too gnarly 50'ish yr old judo bbs who train with me. they have very little flexibility and would have NO chance of doing rubber guard (or high kicks for that matter) regardless of what stretches they did...but there's plenty of other things they can do and thats what they spend their time on

sometimes its better just to be honest

Well the difference between that example and this case is that you completely understand the context and situation of those two guys. And within the realm of grappling and MMA you more than anyone else, would understand the pros and cons of attempting to develop such techniques as rubber guard and high kicks.

But in this, unless I'm missing something, all we really know about Package, the individual in question is that he trained in something before and took a break and he wants to get back in. I don't know what martial art he trained in, for how long and how long it has been since he took a break. Nor do I know what martial art he plans to being/continue training in. Nor do I know anything about him physically.

It's possibly that package is 25 (although he does have a young child, they do start early on the northside) has a good base in TKD and wants to train in Kyukushin Karate. Then I would say, YES, absolutely, try and develop your flexibility and conditioning so that you can improve your ability to throw high kicks at an opponent.

It's also possible he's 35 and did a bit of kratty and might start doing a bit of MMA with Roper and I would agree, the ability to do extreme/flicky high kicks is not useful or a efficient way to train.

What's the definition of a high kick? Anything above the thigh? waist? to the shouler or above?

As a matter of interest, does Arni train high kicks?

Just come on down and get stuck in. Forget about "getting fit" before going back, you will never get around to it.

The first few sessions back will hurt a bit but they won't kill ya.

I am only back training myself in Roper's place and have very little MA experience and I am very unfit so I know exactly you feel:D.

Also don't worry about high kicks, we don't do them very high.

In short get training, try the one on one classes and try Roper's and see which one suits you better.

High kicks get you a far higher quality of woman... Rubber guard probbly does too but I'm not good enough at that to score with it.

i'd recommend yoga/meditation to help quieten that hyper-internal regret-worry dialogue. time for another new handle....or to stop and stop thinking...

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 1,322 ✭✭✭Package

haha,, thanks for all the advice...Rubber guard and stuff

anyway. i used to do karate, untill i was about 12 ish, or maybe more, but when i used to go to the gym a couple of years back, i used to mess about with the bags, punching and kicking. but i would like to learn more about grappling and self defence as well as the fun stuff like hitting and kicking people, :D:D:D

im 28 now and tremendously unfit, but feck it. i'll jump in a.s.a.p. i suppose.

ps. im gary, my little fella adam does Ropers on Tuesdays and fridays.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,448 ✭✭✭Roper

Ah Gary it all makes sense now! Don't mind all the above, the important thing to note is that we were all beginners once! And sure if you can't get down, Adam might be able to pass on a few tips from home:D

No need to get upset john, the thread is an open discussion although it has veered off topic so I'll say no more.

Hi Package. I'd thoroughly recommend Ropers place. Like yourself I was "tremendously unfit" having not done any sporting activity since PE in school!!! Now 3-4 weeks in I'm starting to notice a difference (I can walk in the days following training :) ) and am really starting to enjoy it!

No worries John. Just for future reference, if you feel yourself getting a bit upset or disgruntled by other peoples opinions on message boards, just turn the computer off, take a quick walk around the block and come back. This helps to reduce over reactions to quite benign situations. Good to hear your ok now.

...anyway good luck with your training Gary, you wont go far wrong training out at Roper's place. i've been there a couple of times - sound bunch of lads :)
