    Hi,

Just being looking around and saw this beng thinkin about going on it but not sure what to expect. Basically i'm just curious if anyone has any advice on round the world tickets and how much they cost? and destinations in general.

Was thinkin of going London > new york > tokyo > Bankok > Darwin > (overland) > sydney or melbourne > Dubai > London.

really just looking at putting a ballpark figure on how much a trip for 4-5 months will cost me!

How long do you plan on staying in each place?
London, New York, Tokyo and Sydney can be expensive.

hmm yeah budgeting is my hardest part, say I spend:

€700 per week for each of the first worlds cities so about €3500
€1000 for two weeks in Thailand
€1500 to €2000 for the RTW ticket

so about €6000-€6500 for the whole trip sound about right?

would think about going for longer and working for a few months in OZ if I could get a visa and the ticket worked like that.

I don't know what you plan on doing in Thailand, but 1000 for 2 weeks sounds like an awful lot. Our budget (while staying in reasonably nice places, and sightseeing every day) was 500 for a month! You could easily drop that down to 3 or 400, unless you're planning on going 5*.

And I think you may have to apply for the OZ visa before you enter the country. Otherwise you'll have to get a flight out to apply for the working visa before reentering (not a cheap method)

I went on a round the world trip for all of last year - the best memories and experiences came from the most random places in the centre of China, and the unexpected destinations like Borneo.

Your trip seems very concentrated on large western-style cities, are you planning to travel around the countries or just spend a week or so in the cities? That could be very tiresome and expensive. Also travelling overland from Darwin to Sydney is going to be very very expensive, and will take weeks! I drove the east coast of Australia, and although we had a good laugh, to weigh up cost versus experience, we should have just spent 2 extra months in Nepal or Tibet or something.

If I was doing the trip all over again, I'd cut out Australia alltogether and spend the money in Asia - it goes a lot further, and you will meet some amazing individuals.

What are you hoping to get out of this trip?

Wow your trip seemed amazing, I kinda agree with ya about going away from big cities just wasn't sure what would be good in asia off the beaten track.
I like your idea about going to tibet and vietnam etc.
I'm really just looking to have a great trip overall cause i will hopefully be off next year as i finish college, plan on starting around the same time of year you did, just after xmas 2008, work up a bitof cash for my trip.
at the mo i'm looking into stuff, going to go to library and get a few books about asia and off the beaten track places.
was thinkin of doing an overland/sea trip from dublin to somewhere like thailand because it would be a great experience.

thanks for advice, i'll probably have a few q's for ya in a short while.

    Thanks
    Omar
