Problem with wireless since updating

    Hey all..

I updated OS X on saturday.. Just through the normal way.. On the update menu it came up something with airport extreme. I OKed this and since then my wireless has been dropping out for no reason.. I reboot the computer and its fine for an hour or so and then starts to drop out.. I have tried to install an earlier firmware version for Airport extreme as instructed on macfixit.com but no base station is recognised to update.

    Any ideas?

What did you update to? 10.4.8? What kind of mac do you have? Is it a Intel C2D?

Yeah its an intel C2D.. It wasn't a complete upgrade.. Just certain parts that came up.. Think there was an upgrade for iphoto as well.

You're probably going to have to manually connect to the Airport station and reinstall the old firmware.

There's a lot of problems with the C2D macs and poor/dropping Airport signal anyway. I only get two bars on my iMac and the base station is 2 feet away. Plenty more people with same problem over at the Apple discussion board. It seems to be a problem with OSX which will hopefully be fixed in 10.4.9.

I assume yours was working ok before the update so you might be able to restore it to the way it was.

interesting, i did the same update too. I dont have those problems but i dont always have full wireless signal. Presume no quick fix until next release?

There wasn't a problem until I updated. does anyone know when the next update is due? Is manually connecting to the airport station difficult?

Just connect an ethernet cable between your mac and the base station. Then try restoring the old firmware. This should hopefully fix your problem.

10.4.9 will be the final update to Tiger before Leopard so it should arrive in the next few months.

Was online for most of the day today with no dropping out problems what so ever. Back online tonight and the dropping out seems worse than ever. Definitely more regularly that ever before. Strange. I changed channels in the internet settings last night and thought that fixed the problem.

It's getting quite frustrating now to be honest. It takes me to shut down the computer fully before I can get back online.

I've been looking around on the internet and it seems that AirPort Extreme Update 2007-001 is the problem and it seems to be a common problem with this update. Hopfully they release something shortly to counter this issue.

That's funny because that update resolved my airport problems which occurred when I updated to 10.4.8...

Have a look at this thread (set aside a few hours) which details some of the troubleshooting which _may_ help > http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=845499&tstart=0

That would coincide with other posts talking about Eircom Routing problems.. My connection still hasn't got any better.
