My favourite new pilot of the season (and probably my favourite pilot in a long, long time) shall get it's US TV premiere on March 5th.. it was supposed to start airing in early January but DigitalSpy says:
NBC mid-season drama The Black Donnellys will make its debut on March 5, it has been confirmed.

The show - a gritty drama following four young, working-class Irish-American brothers living in New York and involved in organised crime - will air at 10pm after Heroes, bumping Studio 60 which the network says will return later in the season.

NBC will also replace 30 Rock with Andy Barker, PI in the 9:30pm slot on Thursdays. Rock will return to the schedule after Barker finishes on April 19.
Straight after 'Heroes'... sounds like a damn good night of TV!

The pilot was written and directed by Paul Haggis and co-written by Robert Moresco whose writing and directorial efforts combined include: Crash, Letters from Iwo Jima, Casino Royale, Flags of Our Fathers, Million Dollar Baby.

PS - update on 'The Black Donnellys' front from TmB:

I saw the pilot awhile back and I was very, very impressed.

If the entire series is as good as the pilot then The Wire may have some competition in my favourite show category.

OMG I can't wait. This was definitely the best pilot I've ever seen and will be recommended to all if it remains that good. :)

I've watched that pilot again and again. it's just superb. brilliant and really eclectic soundtrack. Would like to get my hands on some of that Nuttin but stringz stuff.

I didn't know you liked this pilot Basquille? Why didn't you tell us before? :D

I still haven't watched it and that was largely because I was waiting for the series to be announced that it would actually air. I didn't want to set myself up for a disappointment. Now I feel I can!

And it doesn't look good for "Studio 60..." if it's been taken off for a while. What a shame...... not.

It is fantastic... i know what you mean with regards to whether it got picked up for a full series and while we're on the subject, what ever happened to 'Traveler'? That was supposed to air mid-season too if i remember correctly.

I just hope 'The Black Donnellys' pilot airs exactly how the pilot did - same casting, same music etc. Especially ** THAT** piece of music.. anyone who has seen it will know the exact piece of music i'm on about - that scene NEEDS that music!

Yeah, i'm all cut-up about that too. The West Wing was more eventful in it's first episode than this has been in half a series!

That piece of music has apparently been replaced by that band who did quite well at a recent Irish award show.

Yeah, heard about that, for shame :(

    Snow Patrol now, isn't it.

Am I the only one who hated this (the pilot)? I've hated pretty much every new series this year, including Dexter and Heroes, with the possible exception of The Nine and Studio 60 (it must be a numbers thing). It's like some parallel world of didgy tv...

Don't know how anyone could hate that pilot - just top-class writing and directing from start to finish.

OT: 'Studio 60' had fair enough a fantastic pilot, but the series has been less than inspiring. But 'The Nine' - well, clearly no accounting for taste!

PS - i hated the 'Heroes' pilot but it's turned into a damn fine show! And 'Dexter' was probably the finest show this season.

Reminded me of the Brothers McMullen I think. Despised that and hated the cardboard cliché characters of this one.

Interesting, I didn't even bother watching beyond the pilot of Heroes, but might yet get round to episode two.
Also, the nine only kept me entertained until episode five or so.
Dexter - Jesus, just how many f*cking series about criminal pathologists/psychologist/forensicbollockilogists with an 'edge' are they going to keep foisting on us? I didn't get beyond the pilot on that one either, and it was a struggle to get through the 45 minutes.

I think the Knights of Prosperity is the only show with a bit of originality about it to come out this year, and it shows.

Umm surely the fact that the lead is a psychopath himself makes it more than just a little "edge"? It's central to the storyline of who and what he is and drives the whole series. This isn't an "edge" in the way CSI: Miami is set during the day over CSI's night. It's a lot more than that.

Seriously worthy of a second attempt - we can't all be wrong can here can we?

As to 'Studio 60' - it's okay but that's it. Trying a bit too hard for its own good to be clever and I prefer the behind-the-scenes view that you got in "The Larry Sanders Show". That was also funny...

I watched the first 4 episodes of studio 60...to me it just seemed liked the west wing set in a tv network. oh look a press conference. oh look people walking through a corridor talking far too quickly to show how smart they are. oh look person has secret shame that the press gets hold off.....yeaaaaaaaaahhhh to me ive seen that before. But dexter, that has much more substance. It's fascinating for the character developement alone. As for the CSI bit, there's very little. You get to see a guy plan and execute murders all the while playing cat and mouse with a serial killer. its quality stuff.

As for Black Donnellys i'm gutted they're replacing arcade fire with snow patrol. are they insane? jesus talk about flavour of the month.

If there's one thing i've noticed about US programming - they absolutely love using anything from 'Eyes Open'

Grey's Anatomy use an average of 9 Snow Patrol songs an episode! *

    * bit of an exaggeration... but not far off!

Far more disturbing is reading that 'Heroes' is going on a loooooonnnggg break after March 5 until April!

Great news... cheers for that, Dave!

As for Studio 60, good riddance to bad rubbish!

PS - the March 5th episode of 'Heroes' will be a big 'un though.. i'll say no more!

Pffff, think I'm going to give up watching new series until they have at least three seasons behind them. It's ridiculous they way they only give shows a couple of weeks to become world-beaters or dead wood.

Might start watching Canadian TV instead...

I agree pickarooney. I'm working my way through The Wire (which is fantastic) and it's great to know there is 3 seasons already in the can with a fourth to come.
