Jesus Christ it's ****ing awful! I imagine that's what a Gawlay hooker on the game during race week must actually taste like. I tried to drink it down I did pay for the ****e and wasn't about to make my way all the way back throught the bar to get a refund. Drink is drink I kept telling myself but I couldn't do it without gagging.

    MANK!

Where'd you get it ? Massimos or ?

Have had it before twice .. to try it out ... I think for some reason it reminds me of soap ...

Well, I do enjoy it albeit usually with a Guinness top.
I think there was a heated discussion on in Beer forum

It is like discovering beer all over again, don't think anyone liked the first taste of beer but once you had it a few times...

Ya I got it in Massimos.

By the way is Massimos a gay bar?

Yes it is - not sure if any homosexuals actually go there , but it is definitely gay . :)

Confusing it with the place down the street I'd say.

I hate beer anyway, but a single sip of the Galway Hooker had my stomach in turmoil, what a truly awful brew. Wonder how it's selling generally around the place...

Ah right, two people told me since it was a sausage factory.:p I remember talking to a few birds in there but I was meeting old school friends and wasn't really paying attention.

It's Guinness and Carlsberg fecked into a pintglass.

I got a horrible chemical tinge off it, and haven't drank it since.

I had a taste of a pint of it before Christmas in the Beirhaus. It was foul. There was a gang of about 10 of us there horsing into various drinks but the glass of Galway Hooker lasted the whole night without anyone taking any more than a small sip. I don't know anyone that likes it. How does it manage to still be sold if no one drinks it? They must have some serious financial backing I suppose....

i've never heard of anybody liking it, and i now am unwilling to try.
Thank you boards.ie for keeping me on the guinness!

I've tried it on 2 seperate occaissions, and frankly, I found that it was quite good.

What do you normally drink Karl?

I'd say it's for tourists, they buy two pints expecting something along the lines of guniess. If they complain the barman can get all stropie and accuss them of insulting his county.

    Hi All,

I’d just like to respond to some of the remarks made about the beer. First of all, I’d like to thank you for trying it and commenting on it. We have deliberately set out to produce a unique beer for the Irish market, one which possesses significantly more flavour than the main-stream options. As it is a speciality beer, we do not expect that everybody will embrace it, but for those who enjoy full-flavoured hoppy beers it should be a good option. Some of the remarks such as the beer causing a gagging reaction are obviously of concern to us. Although we do not expect everybody to love the beer, we do not expect anybody to gag on trying it. I can only explain it and apologise my suggesting that you may have received a bad pint. We do not add any chemicals or preservatives to the beer and it is not pasteurised. The beer therefore has a very short shelf-life (about one month, compared to several months for the multinational beers). Although it is our responsibility to ensure that every pint is perfect, we cannot be in every bar all the time to make sure that their stock rotation is done correctly. Brewing is our passion and providing great beer is what we spend all our time trying to achieve. I would also like to emphasise that we do not brew for the tourist market; our desire is to produce great beer for the people of Galway. Also, much as we would like it, we do not have “serious financial backing”. We are just two local guys producing beer in a small little craft brewery (650 litres per batch) with very little resources. I hope that I have gone some way towards explaining our position and that you will keep an open mind about the beer.

    Cheers

    Aidan

    Aidan, thanks for the response!
Any chance of visiting the brewery?

Oh, and if you're new to Galway reader, do try a glass of this.

Your beer wont cause a gagging reflex its the plonker forcing themselves to drink something they obviously do not like thats doing it to themselves, it could be anything, for me its grapefruit juice ,the smell alone is enough.

Depends. Generally Guinness, but I'm a man of very fine tastes when it comes to alcohol, so when I can afford it, I like to indulge in any imported beers, Hoegaarden being one I can get in a few locations now. Also quite a whiskey fan, and I've certainly got a thing for Midleton. Sometimes though, I'll drink Stella Artios, if there's not a decent pint of guinness to be had, or the selection is poor.

Anyway, I liked the Galway Hooker, it was pleasant. I'd far rather have a Hoegaarden mind you, but I did indeed like said Hooker.

A group of us had a few pints of it in Tigh Neachtain at Christmas - all thought it was lovely. Great to get something with a bit of taste for a change. Not as strong flavoured as I would have expected for an IPA, but if that's what it takes to get it accepted in Ireland I'll live with it!

Galway hooker once saved Drake from getting sick on a night out as he nursed it for aprox 90 minutes before he finished one pint of it.
Me, on the other hand, decided enough was enough after 2 mouthfuls and left it. In hindsight it probably wasn't the best decision :S

I had a pint of Galway Hooker in the Cottage Bar a few weeks ago. I thought it was fine and would drink it again.

In fairness, it's a Pale Ale and I think it said so on the tap. It's not your typical Carlsberg or Heineken.

If you're not used to that type of beer, it might give you Bitter Beer Face...

    :)

Howdo Adrian I'll give it another go so, see I'll drink anything but I do preffer lagers or cider and I like me lager strong. Ever since travelling Europe I won't drink Heiniken it's just not up to standard anymore.

I wouldn't be surprised if the GH was gone off in fairness it did taste like it, very very sour. Next time I'm in Galway I'll give it another shot, I'm all for supporting local brewerys the quality of beer in this country is a disgrace. That's why I jumped at GH as soon as I saw it.

How much is Galway Hooker anyway? Is it a beer or a lager? Where would you reckoemnd to find a good pint of it?

If it's too bitter for your taste, ask for a few drops of Guinness on top. Smoothens it out a bit.

    Hi Guys

Thanks for keeping an open mind about the beer. Like I said before, the beer has significantly more flavour than the mainstream options. The beer is a pale ale, broadly based on traditional India Pale Ales that were produced in Burton towards the end of the nineteenth century. These beers are famous for their dominant hop characteristics, which resulted in a very bitter and dry drop.

Now this is not a sales pitch, but what I honestly believe from the bottom of my heart: once you get used to these styles of beer, you can never go back. It would have been all too easy for us to produce another standard lager or stout and just lob it in next to the other main-stream beers. But we really want to produce a special and unique beer. Also, believe it or not, Galway Hooker is a very tame version of this style. If I had it my way, it would be about twice as bitter, but I suppose that it's one step at a time.

I am aware of at least one incidence where Galway Hooker was on sale past its best before date. Our top priority since then has been to make sure that all of the pubs' stock levels are kept as low a possible. Therefore, the beer should be fresh whenever and wherever you get it in future. However, there is one very easy way to tell if our beer is off. In exactly the same way that milk curdles when its off, our beer will turn cloudy and look like a Erdinger. Like I say, we're working closely with the pubs to make sure that this never happens again, but if it does PLEASE CONTACT ME and let us know.

I'd also ask you to consider why it is that our beer has a shelf life of one month and the multinational brews will remain preserved for up to six months?

We are also hoping to arrange regular tours of the brewery for those who are interested, so people can see exactly what we do.

    Thanks

    Aidan

I'm always very forgiving when it comes to alcohol. :D I was drinking Bulmers that night which might have made it seem even more sour because of the sweetness of the cider. I might have to go up to Galway early in the day and have a good long season. How much is it though?
