Msn Messenger behind a firewall on a mac

    I'm sitting behind what I think is some sort of ISA firewall yoki...
    anyhow I know that there is a http proxy running on port 8080...
    So I try getting msn messenger working... first by setting the http proxy set up in system settings...

    *changes network settings to get proxy set up*
    *opens safari*

    so far so good

    *opens messenger*

    oh dear... doesn't work

    *sets proxy manually on messenger*

    ... nope

    *gets adium and sets up (with and without http and proxy*
    a writing error... and some other connection errors along the way

    amsn and fire just seem to crash everytime I open them....

    *runs winxp in a virtual machine*
    *sets up proxy in IE*
    *runs messenger*
    ah it works...

    WHY???
