    Hi folks,

Aside from the standard questions one would ask someone selling their car, what are the first questions you would ask about a classic?

For instance, does "duty paid" mean that it is registered over here, and won't need any further paperwork / procedures done?

    thanks,

    Eoin

Just be sure your not taking on someones problems and bring a mechanic, also ask if they would mind the AA coming out to have a look. The AA can carry out an inspection for a small price. The obvious things you might ask about would be vehicle history like accidents and oustanding payments on the car.

Thanks - a mechanic will be a must if I do go out and see something, but I was just really looking for questions that you should ask about classic cars in particular.

Every classic has different questions that should be asked depending on the type of car. The thing about classics is that the current owner rarely has a full knowledge of the cars past so questions like"has it been crashed" and "what work has been done on it" become pointless.

A question I asked was: "what would you get done on it next?", or how about "does it give you any trouble/has it broken down", if its a proper classic: "where does it leak from?", or "what caused the last break down"

I would have taught that half of the fun of owning a classsic car would mean that you would be willing to carry out regular maintenance checks. If I had a choice of a classic though it would be a muscle car with a V8 in her. :D

That's pretty much what I'm aiming for myself. Have no problems with learning to do what I can myself; I just want to arm myself with as much knowledge before I commit to anything.

Good point(s). When I've made my mind up (I think I pretty much have) I'll research the questions relevant to the car itself.
