    Hi,
Im slightly interested in joining the PDF or the RDF in a few years and am curious as to what life is like in a barracks in general.

Im not a sissy but i have this picture in my head of other soldiers doing stuff like putting pollish on the face of a new recruit at night or taking his stuff etc...( like half bullying/ half prank). Is it a good laugh in a barracks or can people make your life kinda crap there.

Thanks a lot for any replies given.

Yes Pranks do happen, but usually they're not malicious, polish and camo paint tend to be the usual, You will have a locker in the billets and you will have to bring your own lock(it won't be issued) so your stuff will be safe.

It's all in good fun so don't take it to heart. You have to have a fairly thick skin. You will have a good time with the RDF, but there is a lot of hard work too.

Life in barracks in the Army (a.k.a. PDF by some) is definetly different. You would basically do 6 months in recruit training and be thrown into the mix with 30-40 people you don't know from adam so the usual feather ruffling and slagging would take place to see who is the weakest of the bunch. But as for getting polished etc. none of this would really happen due to room/kit inspections, at least not until the end part of your training.
You are not gonna want to incur the wrath of your NCOs just to put a bit of shaving foam on some one.
Bullying is NOT tolerated in Recruit Training whatsoever and allegations are taken VERY seriously these days so as to not the sully the good name (rofl) of the Defence Forces. God forbid that we put the boot in while training Irelands little darlings to (possibly) kill someone.

Outside of recruit training a normal day in barracks is half-eight to half-four. If you're stationed close enough to your home then you'll be in your own bed most nights, although there is a brief 'living-in' period that everyone goes through until you can prove that you'll be on time for parades and duties etc. then you'll be marked as 'living-out'

But basically if you can't take a joke stay well away from the reserves and the Army as with all the down time there is no one as mischievious as a Bored Soldier.
