This has probably asked over a million times but..

I heard DIT and all the ITs were moving to a new location. I can't remember the name! Assuming this is still going ahead, would all students from current courses in any IT go there?

And will it still be an IT? Or will it get university status?

Oh.. and where would it be?

wouldnt expect to be attending any lectures in grangegorman for at least another 6 years tbh

DIT has nothing to do with the other ITs. Grangegorman will be DIT only. Some say it will get University status when it moves there. It's a nice idea but I'm not sure if it will work in practice. Some things are pretty backward in DIT e.g. Results Online, Timetables Online, Elearning etc.

I don't really mind what it looks like. I was more interested to see if it would be open by the time I am in college.

And DIT has nothing to do with the other ITs? Really? I didn't know that. Not even CIT etc?

No, DIT is a National Institution which awards its own awards just like a University, its awards arent accredited by HETAC for example which regulates awards to other IT,s.
This doesent mean it is a University however as DIT isnt included......yet.

DIT pretty much is a university in everything but name though. It has its own awarding powers and is an affiliate of the European University Association although not a full member as it lacks the title. I thought I heard it would apply for the title when it moved to grangegorman and be called something like Dublin Metropolitan University.

Oh, I never knew that! That's pretty cool :)

But the problem with that is those of us who have degrees from DIT will have degrees from a college that doesn't exist anymore if it is renamed.

Interviewer of the future: So BigL, I see you have a degree from DIT? Whats that? I don't know it and I see no reference to it online? Mustn't be much of a degree if the college doesn't exist anymore?

I cant really see that being much of an issue, but its an interesting thought!!! :)

I heard DIT degrees were accredited by Trinity. You got a link to back up what you're saying?

Trinity used to give the degrees until the, Dublin Institute of Technology Act 1992

SO who awards the degrees now? (Like UoD awards them to TCD, is it anything like that?)

DIT has its own awarding powers in Ireland its one of the recognised awarders

Higher (or third-level) education awards in Ireland are conferred by Dublin City University, Dublin Institute of Technology, Higher Education and Training Awards Council, National University of Ireland, University of Dublin and University of Limerick. These are the degree-awarding authorities approved by the Irish Government and can grant awards at all academic levels.
