    yep

same if you fail english or maths

q-if you pass all these 3 , how many other subjects need to be failed in order to fail the junior?

The 'fail Irish, fail the whole thing' policy was done away with about 30 years ago AFAIK. Many students don't even sit Irish.

From the SEC's point of view, for statistics etc., 5 passes at Ordiinary Level is taken as the 'pass' mark for Junior Cert..

you can fail the jc now?

Now now children. We all know that the JC doesn't matter. Don't let any of this teacher scare-mongering get to you or there'll be words.

whether the JC matters or not is questionable, in 1 school the JC results are used for class placements for LC, if you don't reach a particular grade in a compulsory subject you will be placed further down the line of classes, regardless of your subject choices.

This may not matter unless you hope to achieve highly and dont, the JC grade can cost you or win you your place in the top class, if thats what you want

You can still sit honours if you wish but you will be moving at a much slower pace, its kind of a limbo place as although you are in honours, the work is not keeping pace with the other class.

For some this situation doesn't matter but for some it does, in the school I speak about, the mocks are used for guide until the JC results come out and thats when the movement of students takes place. Unless of course you have come from TY, then they already know where to place you.

In some schools is the thing to bear in mind, most people I've been talking to it doesn't really matter what your results were, classes are not streamed and your results don't determine what classes you're allowed to take. But it depends.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,366 ✭✭✭ninty9er

    Not streamed.......

Maths especially, and also Irish require rigorous streaming for all levels to be successful.....

bull....i know soomeone who failed foundation irish...they got 28%.....but he still got the jc.

You'll get your Juniour Cert regardless. A friend of mine failed Maths, Science and Irish and still got it

Also, don't believe what the teachers are telling you. It's all to trick you into studying

AKAIK passing 5 subjects is considered 'passing' the JC. I am quite certain that failing any one particular subject is not considered a failed JC. Huge numbers of people dont do Irish anyway so it just couldnt be.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,376 ✭✭✭gaeilgegrinds

You get the piece of paper regardless but yes you have to pass English, Gaeilge and maths.
And the currect percentage not doing Irish is between 7 & 8%, they are exempt due to arriving in the country after 11 or having seom sort of linguistical difficulty with it. Any other questions please ask. Am an Irish examiner.

I asked what happens if my son fails his JC (he has special needs) and was told that no one fails it.

That would be the view of the State Examinations Commission. For years they have been trying to make the Junior Cert. an exam to encourage people to stay in school, not to label people as 'failures'.

Despite what the majority of boards.ie posters might think, there are still many people for whom sitting the Junior Cert. at any level at all is a major achievement.

What exactly does it mean to "fail" the jc.
    What would happen?
You cant fail it as a whole unless you fail all of the subjects, surely?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,713 ✭✭✭Bonavox

How can you not be doing Irish?
I thought that was a mandatory subject.

    I wish I didn't do Irish, I have an Irish exam in 2 hours, of studying I go . . .

Well I'm from England so yeah.. Most people don't do it either cos they're dyslexic or from some other country. :D

    Same =]
Came to Ireland (from England) in 5th class.
Tried to make me do Irish but after soon finding out I was horrible at languages, they gave up =]
Why I dont have to do Irish. I missed the basics.
It seems good but Im a subject down for the LC.
Im going to take business as an extra subject.

You can't "fail" your Junior Cert. Even if you got an N.G (<10%) in every subject at foundation level, you'll still be entitled to go into 4th year. There is no "Fail" or "Pass" at the bottom of your statement of results saying you failed or passed the JC. It just tells you your grades.

dudes im doing theleaving atm yyou cant actually fail the junior cert you can fail every subject and still go into fifth year its a totally irelevant exam
guy in my year only passed 4 subjects
