Myself and some friends are considering going to Hamburg for Paddy's Day one of my mates was there last summer for a World Cup game and he was raving about the place, has anyone been there for Paddy's Day, or just give me the low-down anyway, cheers.

Well, unless you are in an Irish bar there won't be anything else going on. The quality of Irish pubs here in Hamburg is not great compared to other cities but you can still have a good night. Should be a good day as it's also the last day of the 6 nations so that should have more of a crowd in. Besides that though it's a good city for heading out in, main areas being Schanze and the Reeperbahn.

The main area for going out is Reeperbahn (or Keets as it's locally known). You can get to it by getting off at stop St. Pauli on the U-bahn or stop Reeperbahn on the S-bahn. Every form of entertainment you can think of is here, theaters, restaurants, live gigs, clubs, strip clubs, bars, brothels, casinos, etc. I like the area of Hans Albert Platz, some good bars around there. If you are walking down from the St. Pauli stop it's the square on the left about 100 yards past Burger King. Just watch out for the girls doing their trade, they can be quite annoying and will hassle you. They are easily spotted, usually wearing bomber jackets, ugg boots and a bunbag! There is also the famous Herbert strasse, which is behind this square. It's a men only street with girls in the window just like Amsterdam.

Pubs are opened all night. No idea about clubs though, in all my time here I've yet to get to one here in Hamburg but clubs in Germany are different to Ireland. People go for the music and not the drink! If you are up for a strip club then the Doll House would be one of the best, it's on Grosse Freiheit which is further down the main street on the right. You can't really miss this street, quite colourful! The Doll House is good fun and not very seedy and it's usually half men/half women in there. Once a table is free you can sit down and buy Dollhouse dollars. A girl will dance on the table and you can stick the dollars on her - and not just with your hands :p

Another area for heading out is Schanze but it's more relaxed with some good bars. You can get to it on the u-bahn or s-bahn - stop in Sternschanze.

If you are looking to watch the rugby game somewhere then the best place is probably Finnegans. It's in the center of Hamburg. You need to get to the Rathaus, plenty of u-bahn stops will get you to the area depending on which line you are on - Jungfernsteig and Rathaus would be the closest. The bar is a bit hidden away. Best way to descibe it would be- if you are standing in front of the Rathaus looking straight at it (huge building with a square in front of it, impossible to miss), then walk around to the left hand side of the building. Walk along this street and cross the road. You will pass a coffee shop on on a corner. Keep walking in the same direction that you have been and take the next left and it's about 20 meters in, you'll see it!
