Hello. I would like to get a contraceptive pill but I am afraid to go to the doctor. I would not like him and not allow him to check me out. I would like to know what exactly is the procedure of getting the pill? Would it be possible to get the pill without letting him "check me out"?

   ... yeah, sure....

If you don't like him to check you out then i won't mention smear tests.... oops;)

To be honest i don't think the doc even ''checks you out'', not in the way you're thinking anyway.

Hey go to the doctor, all they will do is ask a few questions, do you smoke, are you having sex etc and check your blood pressure. thats about it. once you are on the pill every six months you are supposed to get a check up, smear test etc, thats not to say everyone does though.

Really, how old are you? As a female, once you're sexually active, you should undergo routine smear tests, which involve your doctor "checking you out". If you're not comfortable with a male doctor, get a female one. Sure, it's a bit awkward the first time, but you get used to it. Doctors do that kind of thing every day. You're not the first, you're not special.

Anyway, the doctor will just get some details like lil'one outlined, and you'll be required to get an appointment with the doctor every six months to get your prescription renewed.

And also some follow up appointments for the first few months to make sure the pill you're on isn't disagreeing with you. If the doctor says "come back in 6 months" request an earlier check-up.

Ask at the surgery if they have a female GP attending. Most do, even if it's only for one or two sessions a week.

If you dn't wnat to seee your regular dr about this then I suggest you change dr to a female one or look at attending an ifpa clnic or a well womans's cantre who have female drs just for dealing with the reproductive needs of women.

But you should tell your dr that you are being the prescribed the pill from there to advoid any clashes of medication for the good of your own health.

A dr will not do an internal exam when persribing the contraceptive pill,
but will weight you, take your blood pressure, ask if you smoke, your reasons for wanting to be on the pill and questions about your families medical history.

Remember the contraceptive pill is not suitible for everyone woman and there are other options and the contraceptive pill will not protect you form hiv and sti and it carries it's own list of risks and contraindications.

The contraceptive pill is a prescription only drug, and therefore, you will have to attend a doctor in order to obtain a prescription.

There are good reasons for this. The pill comes in different varieties, each of which can have side-effects. A conscientious GP will get your medical history as well as a family history to see if there are histories of breast cancer, blood pressure problems as well as blood clotting problems. There are all serious concerns.

As a sexually active woman, you should also be getting regular smear tests. Uncomfortable as they may be, they could save your life, and ensure that you able to have children.

the well woman centre are great about sorting out the pill. as already said, they check your weight, blood pressure and ask if there are any particular illnesses in your family history. they will prob hound you a little if you mention unprotected sex, and go on about sti checks, but they wont make you feel too guilty! good service :)
