    Why that's just preposterous!

Absolutely! Its probably tabloid sensationalism but does that mean that all guns in future movies will have fisher price labels on them???

Well remember the special edition of ET where they used CGI to replace any guns with walkie talkies?

    Huh?
    Never heard about that. Crazy.

Yep... You can read about it here

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E.T._the_Extra-Terrestrial#20th_anniversary_edition

haha.. apparently they also changed the word 'terrorist' to 'hippie'

Bull****. They're overally PC changes. A scene where the FBI guys (or whatever agency they're from) come around the empty ambulance with guns drawn just looks ridiculous with walkie talkies - what the hell would someone be doing pointing a walkie talkie like that?

    Stupid, pointless changes.

its a kids film for God's sake! Why would coppers chasing kids need guns? It doesnt serve a purpose. Also its a post 9/11 world. American kids dont dress up as terrorists at halloween

either way the changes dont lessen the film

They do. The scene where the kids are all being chased by the cops and there is a cop ahead of the kids kneeling down ready to blow E.T. to bits when he comes into view and E.T. knows this so he levitates all the kids into the air bikes and all......possibly one of the most recognizable film scenes in history.

Now the cop holds a walkie talkie ffs - bloody retards and their screwing over classic films for PC sh*%.

OH NO WATCH OUT HE HAS A WALKIE TALKIE ET!!!!

unless im mistaken the road is blocked by a police check point hence why ET does his thing. I think its PC shoite. Sensitivity would be more a word id use.

In reality would a copper pull a gun at a kid on a bike? no.

After stealing a little government black project? Not only would he pull the gun but he also wouldn't miss. He wouldn't wave his walkie talkie at him.

They are stupid PC changes that really lessen the threat to ET and the children. Sensitivity my arse.

If one good thing came of it it was a fantastic South Park episode lampooning the whole thing.

What's next? Replace the fedora with a CGI hat? Replace his stubble with CGI hair? CGI is fast becoming the worst thing to happen to cinema in... well... forever.

They don't at all. I was expecting to hate the changed version of the film but I watch it more frequently than I do the original (mainly for the quality of the sound and transfer, but the changes don't put me off).

LoL that's ridiculous! Then again from an insursance companies point of view having a 65 year old actor running around like a man half his age jumping onto tanks and stuff would mean a large pay outif he got injured and reducing the number of risks is a great idea!

May 22nd '08 is the release date for Indy 4 according to Empireonline.co.uk
Should be a nice start to the summer movies.

I love the way you're applying logic to that one element of the movie, but not to the bits that involve
    - Aliens landing on Earth
    - E.T. forming a telepathic link to a human child
    - E.T. coming back to life
    - E.T. healing cuts and bruises with a glowing finger

E.T. is a fairy tale. Fairy tales don't need guns. Besides, Anyone unfamiliar with the guns-and-terrorists version of this movie would likely have no problems with these scenes. So what's the big deal?

The point is going back and changing films to pander to the ultra-PC attitude that seems to go through society now. It was unnecessary to make those changes to ET in the first place.

Well lets just agree to disagree so. I dont see it having anything to do with PC in this case. Its a kids film after all and the changes dont effect the plot or story in any way.

Aimed at E.T. not the kid.

Aw who cares about flippin E.T., Han Solo shoots first dammit!!

CGI whip? Wouldn't surprise me in the least.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,216 ✭✭✭✭monkeyfudge

Just wait until they revamp Raiders of the Lost Ark and that big bloke with the scimitar pulls out a revolver and shoots at Indiana Jones first.

That's the slippery slope we're heading down now.

Oh christ, I forgot about that. Who could imagine that changing one tiny thing would change a character so drastically. Thank god for ebay and laserdisks of the unchanged trilogy.

They released the unchanged trilogy on DVD last year... any chance to milk some money I guess. But I think they are just transfers of the Laserdisc versions... I think burned the original prints or wiped his arse with them or something.

Close - he just used them to make the special editions, so the original negatives are gone.
