Why do you want to use media player over iTunes? I don't even have an iPod and use iTunes - it is a very good player IMO.

I was bought an Ipod for christmas , cool present , but i would never have chosen an apple player myself as I dont like the DRM and I dont like not being able to drag and drop files ,
Anyway thats beside the point , I really like my ipod , but itunes is an abomination of a piece of software , its just legalised Adware as far as im concerned, forever trying to sell be low bitrate DRM'd crap from their site.
A necessary evil if you like your ipod though.

If you dont want itunes as the default player , then pick any mp3 file , or whatever type of file you want to play in media player , right click on it and choose properties , in the box that pops up you will see a button that says opens with , and if itunes is your default player then thats what it will say , now hit the change button , pick your player of choice , and that should be it. That file should now open in your player of choice and you should have an option to make all files open in that player from then on.

Note that itunes will now try to hijack them back every time you open it , but you can turn this off in the settings menu.

if you just want to play the odd file now and again in media player and dont want to make any global changes then just right click and pick "open with " and you can choose what player to play the file with.

My favourite player is VLC , by the way.

You don't have to deal with any DRM if you don't buy any music from iTunes sotre.

Erm, View -> Hide MiniStore, never click on the Store buttons, and it will never say anything about buying anything. WMP, Winamp, and any other commercial media player is going to try and sell you crap just as much TBH.
