Surfing in Biarritz

Myself and my girlfriend are thinking about booking some flights to Biarritz to do some surfing in May. Has anybody been there at that time? just wondering what the water temperature would be like - would we need to bring wetsuits?

also, how flexible are Ryanair about carrying surfboards - if you don't book the surfboard in when you book the flight, do they charge more again if you try to book it at the airport?

    any help is much appreciated!

Water is not much warmer than here all year round but will be fairly chilly in May. Pollution should be less of a problem at that time of year though (pollution is a big issue on the Basque country coast from Anglet to St Jean de Luz).

I'd recommend a 5 3 winter suit. No need for booties, gloves etc.

Don't even try getting your board on ryanair without paying. Staff have 0 discretion about charging. You're better off paying up front when you book.

Surf quality in May won't be the best but at least the crowds should be a bit smaller.

    Enjoy!!

Hey Rebeller, thanks for that. Had hoped it would be a bit warmer than here but I guess it's still the Atlantic!

To bring the boards doubles the price of the flights so might look at rental options...

Great choice of destination. Was there in July last year and had some great surf. Boardies and rash vest and water was like a bath. Flew with ryanair to biarritz and did the whole basque coast to Bilbao and back. Some awesome spots. In around Biarritz itself, best spots are Anglet to the North (careful of rips by the storm walls) and in the town itself go to the Cotes de Basques instead of the main beach. To get there the coastal road down from the Radisson on the main rd to St Jean De Luz. This road heads back into town by the scenic route. When you get to the bottom bout .5 mile you drive all the way round a parking area and almost back up on where you came taking the low road. Sounds big but only takes bout 2 mins from the Radisson. Its where all the locals surf and pretty friendly too. Best avoided at high tide if not too advanced as waves bounce back off the storm walls.
Car rental for the week is your best bet. €25 a day for Golf TDI. Loads of surf shops around to rent boards from, hourly to weekly rates.
Well worth heading on the coast road by Zaurautz and Mundaka to San Sebastian. Make sure to drive in and explore as some nice breaks you'll have to walk to. Main surf beach in San Seb is best from low to mid. High tide is mainly dumpers but depends on swell.
Also a great drive is to take the coast road from San Seb all the way round to Bilbao, again quiet towns with great surf.
Overall very consistent waves that work with the smallest of swells. Also well worth checking out Hossegor and Mimizan Plage to the north of Biarritz. Nice B&B's in Biarritz on the Port De Vue.
No way 5mm suit. 3 mm max will do. Hell of a lot warmer than here. Also ryanair charge around €30/35 to bring a surfboard so check that one out again definitely. autoeurope.com good for car deals. Hope this helps. Enjoy!!
