, this is the first time digital television will be available from terrestrial transmitter systems in Ireland.

apart from the trial in 1998 and the trial in 2001 Noel
The establishment of a DTT pilot stakeholders’ group by my Department has provided a forum within which stakeholders can raise and discuss issues associated with the pilot and long-term DTT strategy.

were icdg invited to join that ???

You've got to worry when the tone of the conversation goes down the lines of this:
Once DTT is rolled out and viewers swap over to DTT or other digital platforms such as cable, satellite and IPTV, it will be possible to switch off the analogue transmission network.

If Irish DTT is rolled out with only
rte1, rte2, tv3, tg4 and maybe channel6 Irish DTT would be worth it as the bbc/itv digital tv channels are fta on digital satellite

But how is that any different from the situation in any other European country?

    It isn't.

The places in Europe that already have had a partial or full analogue terrestrial switch-off have been able to do so because of there being a large usage of satellite and/or cable in these places, - they only had to worry about getting a minority of viewers to 'go digital' (one way or another).
