i was speaking to my old man a while back. id just watched a race where ruby walsh had been banned for a few days for excessive whipping and so had the jockey who had came second. You may remember this happening (when ruby almost missed the henessey in november). anyway my point was that i felt it was unfair on the jockeys as if ruby hadnt of whipped the hell out of his horse and finished second all of the punters would have moaned. i said this to my old man and he said that he thinks the whip should be banned as it just makes the horse do what it doesnt want to do. he understood the encouragement that it gives but surely a jockey could give it in another way. just wanted to see what the general view is from horse racing goers:) if someone could set up a poll that would be cool. i tried to but im s*** on computers:(

I would keep the whip, but ensure that it is short and padded so that it will not hurt or harm the horse (probably already regulated - I don't know). I know that whips were longer in the past so could hurt more.

I think the whips and regulations are ok. If the jockeys offend they pay. They do need something to encourage and guide the horse. The problem happens when the prize is bigger that the fine / suspension.

In the 1998 Derby, Olivier Pelier got a six-day ban for excessive force and frequency with the whip when winning by a head on High-Rise. I had a £50 double on Shatoush (won Oaks at 20/1), and City Honours 11/1 (2nd in the Derby). I had a win bet on City Honours as well. The excessive whip use was a £15,000 difference to me (and I was there).

whip should stay-its an essential part of the art of horse riding -what should be banned is the way or the reasons they use it

it should be used to scare the horse u often see the jock flashing it in there eyes to show them whats coming and can make the horse concentrate more but whipping it silly is just plain wrong -punters shouldnt come into the equation -at the end of the day it is about horse welfare -would u kick the shi t outof ur dog if he didnt fetch a stick for u

in recent years the new whips actually protect the horse as no matter how hard the jock hits the horse a lot of the force is absorbed thru a type of coil or spring ? i think

it will be a never ending debate im sure

Making the horses run and jump with someone on top of them is already inhumane so i have no problem with them being whipped too.

The rules should be stricter around overuse/misuse of the whip tough. I would disqualify a horse if the rules are broken, it is the only way to stop the jockeys from doing it, particularly in big races

So you'd punish the horse twice?? Not only does he get bet around the place but he doesn't even get to call himself a Derby/Gold Cup/Grand National Champion, or whatever the case may be?

Maybe the sanctions on the jock's could be harsher but not on the poor horse.
