PowerBook and external hard drive

I bought a new HDD for my PowerBook - faster, at 5400rpm, and bigger, at 160GB. And Peat's had a USB 2 caddy in the sale, so I bought that to use with the old drive.

When the new drive arrived, I put it in the caddy and plugged it in, but not only did it not appear on the desktop, it gave a continual series of short beeps and flashed its hard drive light.

Has this happened to anyone? Whassup?

The drive probably needs to be formatted before it can be used. Open up the "Disk Utility" application and see if the drive appears there.

No, it doesn't even appear in Disk Utility. I've ordered a dual FireWire/USB drive, and hope that'll solve the problem. If it doesn't, it's a dud disk.

can you try the drive/caddy combo on a different machine ?

it could well be a drive/caddy issue as opposed to drive/caddy and powerbook issue

can you post more details on the drive & caddy ?

The USB interface should show up in the About This Mac > More Info panel (System Profiler: MacHD/Applications/Utilities/System Profiler). Might help you pin down the problem ?!

I've ordered a Firewire/USB2 combo drive caddy, with a power supply. Hopefully that'll do the trick.
