I bought 256mb of memory form crucial.com over the Xmas period and I installed it into my Dell Inspiron 1000 laptop. It is guaranteed to be 100% compatable but Windows XP doesn't seem to recognize it and is telling me that I have only 224mb of RAM on the system...

Can anyone help me out here as there is no point in me having RAM in the laptop when Windows ain't using it....

Use MemTest ensure that everything is ok. Is it showing up correctly in the BIOS?

Your system could be using some for the onboard graphics.

Memtest ain't loading up for me...server not found...

I checked through the system settings and it ain't being recognized...is there something I have to do to install it?

Yeah, I have the same model of lappy. I have 512MB installed but shows up as 448MB in Windows, 64MB of that is for the graphics I assume (shows up in the Display Settings).

    How did you install yours?

Theres a little hatch on the underneath of the laptop, open it (small philips screwdriver for one screw), slot it in there.

I did that alright and it slotted in fine. Does anything happen software wise?
