As a self employed what does one do with lunch receipts etc? Are these a kosher expense? Can you be in receipt of the daily civil service rate for subsistance if you are travelling around?

I'm afraid these are not tax deductible. The Revenue consider that you need to eat regardless of your employment and so no deduction is allowed.

This is clear cut from a self employed perspective. There's leeway for such expenses if you're an employee, such as subsistence allowance.

While they could be considered accounting expenses in your case, they would (should) need to be added back to get your taxable profit.

How is it that the "civil servants" are allowed the subsistance and the self employed isn't? Would this be akin to discrimination?

It's not just civil servants but all employees.

Not 100% sure about this, but if you formed a Ltd company you would be an employee. Bit of a drastic reason to form a company, and you'd want to make sure first if you would be entitled to subsistence.
