I use my old laptop drive as an external USB drive (with the enclosure etc.), and it's powered from the PC.

I noticed that every time I turn on the PC or log into it the drive doesn't show up in My Computer, and I need to unplug and reconnect it to get it working... oddly enough the green light on the back of the case comes on once the computer does, so there's power getting to it.

Is this standard fare for the likes of USB drives or is there something I need to mess with to get this right?

    Working on WinXP sp 2.`

    cheers
