Need to give 3 references in total. What's usually the process here? Usually I just give the name of my ex-employer's and leave it at that. In most cases I havent stayed in contact with my managers. Is it normal just to give HR contact details ?

Call your referees first to make sure they are willing to give you a (positive) reference.

Thats what most people do. Makes a farce of references doesn't it.

I find that whole reference thing a waste of time. What's stopping you from using your friends/family to impersonate a previous (real or fictious) boss? Also there is a legal issue, a lot of companies have policies against references, written or oral.

    3 ??

    That's crazy.
    Useless.

I would be curious to see where all those recruit consultants are being trained.
Is it in a hidden place in Ireland that I am not aware of ?

Seriously is there any recruit consultant out there that could give us some explanations ?

It's a place in the states. There is a substantial gap in the 3 references as well. I.e last place I finished Summer 06, 2nd Summer 04 then summer 03.

I don't even know my managers name from the middle one! Whoops(Call center tripe)

I lived in California for 8 yrs. There is no way your former boss would say ANYTHING about you to your potential boss other than to confirm you did actually work there and maybe what your job was. Your boss would not say if you were good or bad for fear of a lawsuit.

Not too worried about negative feedback - more so a "Who was that you're asking about?" type response.

my boss at last job was global head. Never really had time for lowly students with lowly prioritised projects!

Yep but in Ireland the reference process is really different.
You guys saying ex-Boss can not give a bad feedback, ok why not, but the way references are being checked is a complicated process here.

The last time I had to provide references, the agency sent a document to fill in where lots of questions were asked, such as "how Mick.fr is behaving in a group? How would you rate him?", "How would you rate him, in a social relations point of vue?", "How would you rate his work performances" ....
People had to provide a full profile with rates on scales...

When my ex bosses, colleagues had to fill in those forms they were extremely surprised.

So references here, are much more than just checking that you have effectively worked for such and such company. And this does not make sense.
