Advice on courses....

    Hi all,

I recently graduated and am currently working now. I live in the Dundrum area and am interested in joining any club that is within a 20 minute drive radius. I really dont want to pay massive 'hello' money and likewise I dont want to keep forking out money for public courses. Basically im after a fairly well kept/challenging golf course.

    Any ideas are much appreciated....

Not to put too much of a dampner on your plan but joining fees or "hello" money as you put it is fairly extortionate in Dublin & surrounding areas.

I've a few friends in the same boat & have advised them to join courses down the country (ensure there GUI affiliated of course) & then play on the extensive open competition circuit.

There's some real gems offering very reasonable subs (Mulranny & Achill in mayo spring to mind).

Besides that I'd say try some of the public courses but pretty sure there still pay as you play though I'm open to correction on that.

Something else that's happened in my club is that we were losing members due to a number of reasons (poor course condition, loss of caterers, drink driving laws being enforced) but to stem the slide they offered a joining fee of €1000 for this year which received massive interest. People are on waiting lists again.. but my point is maybe other clubs will start similar schemes??

As ASBO says extortionate joining fees are pretty much par for the course in the Dublin area although I believe you have some options available to you.

Hollystown offer three categories of membership ranging from E450 to E1350 which may be suitable to you. I believe courses such as Sillogue and Elm Green offer reduced memberhip options allowing you to attain a GUI handicap at a reasonable price thus giving you access to the "Open" Competition circuit throughout the year....a great opportunity to place some very good courses at competitive rates....
