The other half and myself just booked the flights for a 5 night stay in New York next November. Only thing is we now realise were going to be there for Thanksgiving on the 22nd November. Is this going to basically be a waste of a day for us because everything shuts down or is it actually a good thing? We're half contemplating changing our flights but would rather not waste the money :(

Not sure about New York City in particular, but Thanksgiving is probably the biggest holiday in America and a lot of places are shut.
There is a huge parade in NYC on Thanksgiving day called the Macy’s Parade.
I’d go for Thanksgiving and enjoy the day.
However the following day is the biggest shopping day in America and if you are interested in shopping then you will probably enjoy that.

Yep, pretty much everywhere will be closed. Huge holiday over here though a couple of the bigger restaurants stay open and do the whole Thanksgiving thing, heaps of food. Sales the next day (starting from 5am) in just about every shopping centre. :)

Nice, thanks for the advice guys. Must look up this Macy's day parade.
Were heading back the day after but a quick trip to the sales in morning could be handy for xmas presents :)
