Suppose its a yes/no answer. Also does anyone out there know who will be showing the world cup and if it will be possible to see many/all games for free on RTE or BBC?
    Thanks

I thought the RWC was one of the events the British Government deemed to be compulsory free to air and therefore it must be on BBC/ITV.

I wasn't aware SS had the 6N. BBC are certainly making a big deal of their coverage.

    Found this:
United Kingdom - As usual, ITV have the rights for all live matches and highlights packages. The Rugby World Cup is a listed event and is thus restricted by law to free-to-air television, although many 'minor' matches are likely to be shown on digital-only channels ITV2 and ITV4.

Far as I know the BBC & RTE have full coverage of the 6Nations. The World Cup is on ITV in the UK but RTE only have rights for the games with Ireland in them, Setanta have full coverage (or so I've heard). Also I think Sky have the tri nations alright...

They also show Super 14, which is nice on a Saturday morning.

Has it been confirmed that RTÉ have the Ireland games at the world cup, I seriously hope they do cause TV3 are looking for them as well and they have no track record for rugby coverage.

sky sports had the tri nations live, heino cup and english premier league rugby. They have the six nations too, but BBC and RTE show the games at the same time I think
setanta have the celtic league and the 2007 rugby world cup, believe they are showing every single game. TV3 (edit) will have the Irish games and I think BBC the UK teams games.

I still can't find anything official on this, probably clutching at straws I know but while they're there to clutch I'll cling to the hope that RTÉ might get their act together.

And, AFAIK, Newstalk have the Irish radio rights for RWC2007.

Not quite, Setanta had to pass on the rights to the Ireland games in the RWC, (they are the only rugby matches on the protected sports list from DCMNR) and TV3 picked them up. Doughty Hansen, the new owners of TV3, have a share in Setanta now.

Otherwise Dave, your list is spot on. I think that the BBC might now have World Sevens.

I've not seen or heard that... any further info?

I thought the RWC was one of the events the British Government deemed to be compulsory free to air and therefore it must be on BBC/ITV.

The Final is, the rest of the tournament isn't.

British Dept of Culture, Media and Sport PDF on protected sports on TV

Page 11 lists that in the A group (must be shown on Terrestrial TV) the RWC Final. In Group B, where events must be allowed deferred or highlights on terrestrial TV, the rest of the RWC tournament lies, along with the 6 Nations.
So ITV can show the other games on ITV4 (or ITV2 or 3 in daytime games)

A common myth that occurs in this thread....

Sky Sports had some 5/6 nations games some years ago (late 90's-early 2000's) but these only were England home matches and the France home game against England. Highlights were shown on ITV.

They've never shared live coverage of the same games of the tournament with the BBC.

Ireland, Scotland and Wales home games have always been shown on the BBC since time immemorial.

    Irish Times
    05 October 2006
"Newstalk 106-108FM has enjoyed a significant coup in winning the live broadcast rights to the 2007 Rugby World Cup."

To read the rest of the story on the site you need a subscription, but I've heard Eoin McDevitt mention it during Off the ball.

I vaguely remember something like that around that time when they went national... thanks.

I'd heard them mention the newstalk radio deal on air a while back but gutting to have it confirmed that the Ireland games will be on TV3.

It's quite frustrating that established broadcasters can't get the rights to the world cup in Europe, it's the same in France and the UK. ITV1 didn't even show the South Africa New Zealand quarter final in 2003, that's how bad their coverage is and both Setanta and ITV look to have tied up deals for 2011 as well. The nightmare continues.

RTE have the funds to buy the rights. For their own reasons they choose not to do so.

Well Setanta seem to pay over the odds for most of the rights that they've picked up and I'm sure they did the same with the world cup, there's no way RTÉ would have had the money to make the bid that Setanta did for the Premiership.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,726 ✭✭✭✭DMC

Thats my huge fear for Setanta, that they will become ITV Digital mk 2. While paying for a slice of the Premiership in the UK, if the return in subscriber numbers and revenue doesn't follow..... NTL in the UK almost succumbed too.

They paid way over the odds for the USPGA tour too, and I wonder how profitable the SPL and Magners League has been for them. Those two leagues will suffer if Setanta have issues, much like the Football League in England did when ITV Digital collapsed.
