VW Cuts out after short drive

    Hi all

Hope you can help diagnose my problem.

I have a 1.4L petrol VW, The car always starts first time every time, even we cold. However I noticed that If I have been driving for a while then stop for a few mins, say 15 mins, the engine cools a little, and cuts out every time the revs go low.

So if the engine was warm, then stopped for 15 mins, I can restart the car fine, but the first time I have to break and stop the car it cuts out. It'll start again straight away, but this cutting out is repeated until the engine is warm again.

    Any ideas whats causing this?

    Cheers

    B2

Sounds to me like a problem with the Air-flow Meter. Best thing to do with the car is to bring it to a mechanic with a diagnostic tool. They will narrow it down quick enough for you. You don't want to be driving the car that way for long.

I'm assuming that there are no fault lights on the dash. So it could be the air flow meter as bbability says. It could also be a dirty throttle body. Either way it needs a diagnostic check to confirm the fault.

    Thanks for your replies.

Don't suppose you could estimate a ballpark figure of what its likely to cost?

Me hopes its not too high, cos I ain't got no money.

    Cheers

Cleaning a dirty throttle body and then resetting the throttle angle should cost less than €100. If you need a new air flow meter it could cost upwards of €300. But until you get a diagnostic check, you will not know what the fault actually is. So get a diagnostic check done and then see how much more it will cost to get the repair done.

PM me if your in Dublin and I'll give you the details of a garage that will do this for you at a fair and reasonable price.

I had a similar problem with my vw 1.4 saloon polo, I wasn't using it every day and as a result i needed to get a new battery, this also solved the problem of the car cutting out when at low revs, for some strange reason, may be worth trying, only costs 50 quid.

Could also be a problem with the lamda sensor.

Is this the Beta 2, that was a DJ on power FM.?

I had this problem and fixed it. I checked the acid levals in the battery, and found they were bone dry. I topped them up with De-Ionised water, which you can buy cheaply at a motor factors, within two days my car was running like new.

I think the OP's problem has probably been sorted now as you are nearly 4 years too late;)
