Cannot open programs

Hi,
I think I have a virus. I have run AVG, AVASt, Spybot, Defender, Ad aware, and some more that I cant remember now.
When I try to open certain programs, an egg timer appears but program does not open.
But the system tray will tell me it is running!!!??
I have tried to do a system restore, but it did not work.
And recently the system restore does not complete!!
Other than that the machine dell inspiron 9400 is running well. I use AVG antivirus software..:o :mad: :eek:
Any ideas.?
I was gonna defrag the whole thing tonight ..but would prefer not to ...0
