THE average gas bill is expected to tumble by around 30pc as a result of fuel price falls.

Bord Gais confirmed that prices will be reduced by 10pc on February 1, but further falls in international wholesale prices mean the company now hopes to slash prices by a further 20pc later in the year.

The double reductions should mean significant relief for consumers after prices rocketed last summer.

The first cut should result in saving of €120.70 on the average bill, with another €217 reduction to look forward to later in the year.

The double drop will mean the typical annual bill should come down from an average of €1,207 to approximately €869 in October.

It is a complete turnaround for the gas board, who put up bills by 33.8pc after shortages in European gas supplies sent wholesale prices soaring last year.

Now the regulator will expect it to pass on savings of more than €50m to consumers.

On December 1, the State-owned company confirmed it would reduce the price of gas by 10pc following the agreement of the Commission for Energy Regulation.

David Bunworth, Head of Bord Gais energy supply, said they had decided to reduce the price of gas from February 1 rather than later in 2007.

Some screaming from the public followed by an awkward shuffle from the emabarrased regulator can work then.

    Mike.
