I don't know how you would go about backing up data but have you tried calling the Nintendo customer care? They probably charge a ridiculous amount for the call, but I was flicking through the booklet that came with my Wii and it said if you have any problems, don't send it back to the shop you got it from, call customer care, because you will lose all your saved data.

That might suggest that you can't backup your data....(?)

Can't you just back up game saves to an SD card?

i think you can alright. Go to the wii setup screen, it's one of the links in the bottom left. then go to memory with the sd card in. You should be able to click on the save files and press copy and it will ask you if you want them copied to the memory card. You can't do it for any VC games hough but your account has them registered so you can redownload them as often as you like.

Have you got the SD inserted into the Wii at this stage? You should get Copy/Erase options. Wii -> Data Management -> Save Data.

    might be new hope..............http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/systems/wii/en_na/sdCards.jsp#appear

    at this site it says:
    Can't Write to SD Cards
Wii allows you to save game progress and other data right to the console's internal memory. An SD card is not required. However, we understand that players may want to use an SD Card to back up their data.

To write to an SD Card, the Wii console requires a downloaded update. To download updates you will need to connect your Wii to the internet. For information on how, please click here.

Please note, without the update, you can still transfer data off an SD card for use in the Photo Channel. This allows you to view your images, movies, and listen to mp3 files.

If you wish to use an SD Card as a storage device, but are unable to connect your Wii console online or have no plans to do so, please call 1-800-255-3700 for available options.

that number.............what ajustments would need to be made to be callable from ireland?

Have you updated your Wii at all? I mean, it's not a recent firmware updated thats needed - i've been able to copy to SD practically from launch. V strange if you're not getting the option, assuming the Wii isn't having any problems recognising the card itself. :(

1Gb SD cards are very cheap these days.. Around 12 euro delivered from 7 Day Shop. If you buy a few and sell them on to your mates (sharing the postage cost) the cost comes down significantly..

I bought four recently (worked out at 8 euro each), and have been handing them out for Digital Cameras, Vista ReadyBoost, and of course the Wii..

qwertplaywert: Unless you can install that update, forget about it..
Where do you live? Maybe someone who lives nearby can help?

*Edit* - Ahhh... Dundalk... Any other Wii players in the Dundalk area want to let Qwert get his Wii online to process an update?
