Starting with a 3000$ bankroll......

I am mainly going to concentrate on cash games with the occasional STT and MTT. Planning on either 2tabling 1/2$ blinds buying in at 200$ or 4tabling at .50/1$ at 100$ buyin.Ocassional 2/4$ 400buyin.

My question is should I be playing higher stakes with this bankroll or does this seem about right? What stakes do players here play in relation to there bankroll? I feel about playing with 10-15% across 2-4tables is about right.
    Any advice? Criticism?

You are only bankrolled for (edit: I ment .05/1). Don't play higher or you will go broke.

Also based on your post you are a relative beginner, perhaps play lower until you get to be a better player.

Because you know nothing about bankroll management. One of the most fundamental things there is to know about poker.

Please enlighten me so! My pokers good enough for 1/2$ levels. Im in college and all the bankroll is coming from profit over the 3months. I know my Bankroll management is the weakest part of my game, hence the thread.

$3000 is nowhere near enough for even 1/2. Start at .50/1 until you get to 4500 then move up

You are not adequately rolled for 1/2. Play .5/1 (2 tables if ya like to multi).

You are probably of the opinion that there is now way i will lose 3k, however, a bit of negative variance, and the tilt demons pushing you to chase a few losses will soon bring you back to zero at 1/2 with this roll.

You want around 5k+ to play 1/2 comfortably.

What they say here about bankroll management is true. In fact if you were being really stirct with your bankroll it's debatable whether you are rolled enough for shorthanded .5/1.

Saying that If you are willing to take a shot at 1/2 knowing full well in advance that you are not quite adequately bankrolled for it, and are comfortable with this and all it entails i.e. you may be kissing goodbye to $3K, and fully believe you can beat the game then I don't think it's totally crazy to play it with a $3K bankroll, not ideal but not crazy, I mean it won't be the last $3K you ever have will it!?

Still the .5/1 is an easier game and $3k is not to be sniffed at so why not be patient and play the .5/1 until you have about $6K or so.

Also are you newish to online poker? If so I would definitely not play above .5/1 and perhaps this is too high until you get more familiar with it, whether you have the bankroll for it or not.

Bankroll for the game or not, make sure you can beat the game first, gl at whatever level you start with anyway.

I have been playing online poker for over a year at 1/2$ and 2/4$ levels with very good results (built 550euro into over 4000euro profit), only recently I have decided to play seriously ie. a large bankroll at lower stakes to make steady money, before I was taking chances with my bankroll and had the attitude "Ill either win big or lose it all". Going down to .5/1$ from been used to 2/4$ will be a big change but I will definatly take the advice on board.

edit: obviously started at lower levels and worked my way up to 1/2 and 2/4$

Well whatever you're comfortable with really, as I say I wouldn't blame you for playing the $1-$2 if you are confident you can beat it, but it's probably a good idea to get into the habit of being cautious with your bankroll, something I'll fully admit that I get a bit slack with from time to time, that I personally should change, there's no rush after all is there!

How do you work out what level you should be playing at, in relation to bankroll ??
Could there not ba case made if you are a quite good player then you should possibly play at higher levels - not just because you are good but also because you won't have ass many lunatics calling with anything and everything?

20+ buyins for any level generally.

There is a formula to work it out, I'm about to play a tourney but I'll dig it out after, you can always search for it on google.

People often omit that it can be difficult for a player who has been successful at 2/4 to give a flying damn about the majority of pots at 50c/1. You cannot abstract psychology from bankroll management, playing with only 5-10% in play isn't much use if you are not going to fight for the pots and play your A game.

I'm not suggesting that you be reckless with your bankroll, but there's more to it than the maths that some people are suggesting, which also takes no account of skill level. Should Phil Ivey play 50c/1 with 3k instead of 1/2?

pok3rplaya, you say that you know he's a beginner because he knows nothing about bankroll management

i think that this couldn't be further from the truth!! i know plenty of experienced poker players (some very good) whose bankroll management is atrocious and in some cases non-existent (i would include myself in this bracket most of the time!)

and even if you do know all about bankroll management, it doesn't necessarily mean that you will employ it correctly or succesfully!!

i do agree though that it is one of the most essential qualities that you need to be a winning player, it's absolutely vital

Yes but the difference is that the people you are talking about know enough about poker to know that they are exercising bad BR management. This guy doesn't, hence I believe I can be 80% sure that he is inexperienced based on his post alone.

I am 80% sure that the above is not true.

In all fairness who are you to say I am inexperienced from only one post, in which ive admitted the topic is the weakest part of my game "I know my Bankroll management is the weakest part of my game, hence the thread."

Admitting to bad br management doesn't mean its ok to exercise it.

I disagree with pok3rplaya's reasons for being reasonably sure that the OP is a poor player. Many fantastic players have poor brankroll management, or no bankroll management. One of my good poker-playing friends is great at almost every form of poker he turns his hand too but never has any money because his BR Management sucks.

However, this is for the Original poster, there are many reasons why you should start at .50/1 as opposed to 1/2 or 2/4:

For a start this appears to be your first attempt at playing poker seriously with a bankroll. You're more likely to learn discipline and secondary skills like effective multitabling well at the lower limits.

While you have built up this $3k from poker, unfortunately that is no indicator that you are definitely a long term winner at those levels. You have played casually to date, to believe anything else would be to delude yourself, and it is possible that variance has treated you favourably when you have played. I'm not saying that this is the case, just that it could be the case. IF you're about to disover that you're not as good as you think, you're better off discovering that at .50/1.

    Variance is a bitch.

you should play at least 20k hands at .50/1,and only start playing 1/2 when you have about $6k and a ptbb/100 of 5 or more.

this might seem overly cautious but the discipline you will learn while doing this will be invaluable to you if you want to work your way up through the stakes (i wish i had learned this discipline a lot earlier)

also the 20 buyins rule these days is an absolute minimum,i would see 20 buyins more as a shot taking roll, for playing 4 tables 30 buyins would be a minimum, the games these days are tougher and more agressive than when the 20 buyin rule of thumb was devised.

5002rpo what network are you planning on bringing your BR to?.. If its ppp i dont think that you will be able to take .50/1 all that serious TBH. There are more max buyin tables available at 1/2.
