Patenting an Idea / Concept

How can one go about finding out if a design / idea is already in development, have a prettty good idea which would rather not publish here - so basically i want to patent it quick Also because im an design enginner with a large company can i patent this idea / product in my name as it has no links with any of the products…

Also because im an design enginner with a large company can i patent this idea / product in my name as it has no links with any of the products that I am working with or design!! I know designs I draw up in my work belong to the company but if i develop this myself outside work hours what is the standard proceedure like??
