from reading a few threads have noticed that a few of you go shootng on the various lakes dotted round the country. Can you just show up to a lake and off you go or am i just being naive???

If your shooting off land you will need permission from whoever owns the land its also quite possible that someone will hold shooting rights to a pond. With the bigger "leisure" lakes there shouldnt be a problem shooting out of a boat (there are restrictions attached to this) but again while shooting off land you'll need permission to be there.

Maybe wrong but do you not need a foreshore licence!
I know I have one issued for Galway Bay and Lough Corrib

yup you need a foreshore license. I have one, they last 5 years and are free so just get one and if you never use it what harm? They are for the countries larger rivers, lakes etc. The is no restriction as to where you put down. Just because you are from say Dublin doesn't stop you putting down lough Derg or the Shannon.

Ponds are a different thing altogether, usually they are on land a certain gun club will have the rights to, so its a little tougher to get in there.

My advice is to get the foreshore license and put down everywhere you think you might shoot.

Then look for someone in each area to show you the ropes. If shooting from the shore it would be wise to ask the land owners permission to gain access to the lake front.

If on a boat you have way more options, you can launch the boat at a slip way pick your spot, set up and shoot away. Just stay out of sanctuaries and be safe.

Where does a fella get one of these foreshore licences? So I'll know for next year, bit late to be going at it now.

Speaking of staying safe.. This tragic story was in the papers this mornig
Duck hunt ends in drowning tragedy after boat overturns
A DUCK-HUNTING expedition by three friends turned to tragedy when one of the men drowned as they desperately fought for their lives.
The picturesque village of Collinstown in Co Westmeath is in mourning after the body of Martin Grifferty, a single man in his late 30s from nearby Clonkill, was taken from Lough Lene at approximately 2.30am yesterday.
He was hunting with Co Westmeath hurler Andrew Mitchell and another local man, Christy Scally, at an island on Lake Lene known as Winter's Point on Saturday afternoon.
The men were headed back to shore at about 5.30pm when their aluminium boat started taking water and flipped over after getting caught up in reeds.
The men managed to cling onto the side of the overturned boat for about an hour in the freezing, spring-fed water but Mr Grifferty appeared to have succumbed to hypothermia and lost consciousness before losing his grip on the boat.
They managed to pull him onto the hull but he lost consciousness a second time and slipped under the water again as his heartbroken friends were powerless to help him.
They eventually managed to wade to shore and alerted a local homeowner who raised the alarm.
A search was immediately launched, involving garda and coastguard helicopters as well as the Civil Defence and local fire brigade.
Mr Grifferty's body was eventually found near where the boat sank about 300 metres from shore.
His body was taken to the Mullingar General Hospital where a post-mortem is to be carried out to determine the exact cause of death.
Mr Mitchell and Scally were also taken to hospital and treated for shock and hypothermia but were released yesterday.
A friend of the men said the entire village was shocked and saddened by the terrible accident.
"It's a terrible blow to the community," said a friend of the men who did not want to be named.
"The lads had done this dozens of times. It was just a terrible freak accident," he said.
