What does the term "turning" in squash mean. I was reading the Abbreviated rules of squash and came across the term but cant figure it out.
    TURNING (Rule 9)

If the striker has either followed the ball round, or allowed it to pass around him or her - in either case striking the ball to the right of the body after the ball had passed to the left (or vice-versa) - then the striker has "TURNED".

If the opponent is struck by the ball after the striker has turned, the rally is awarded to the opponent.

If the striker, while turning, stops play for fear of striking the opponent, then a let is played. This is the recommended course of action in situations where a player wants to turn but is unsure of the opponent’s position.

Can someone explain it to me in simple english?

I guess its when the ball passes you on one side goes behind you and then you turn around really quickly to the other side and hit it .
Its usually a last gasp shot .

It's more to do with moving to the ball after it has passsed you and hitting the ball after it has passed you. If the ball passes you and you moved to hit it "turn" and hit your oppenent with the ball he/she is awarded the rally. Some beginners feel or think that the rally should be awarded to the person hitting the ball.

Ok... you are in the back court behind your opponent ..ball has passed your opponent on his left going towards the back wall fairly high..ok so far?...you shape to take it on the volley on your BACKHAND..ok?? Then you say" jaysus its too high and fast for this" you let it go to the back wall, step around and now try to take it after bouncing off the back wall on your FOREHAND.

In the meantime your opponent who has been expecting a backhand stroke is now stranded in the middle of the court . You should refrain from striking as at best a let will be judged.
If you strike the ball from this position you risk serious injury to your opponent which is why common sense should be used.

thats the best i can do.
