A few Wii questions..

Have a €100 One4All voucher due to expire in June so was thinking of using it in my local Smyths store to buy the Wii (which by the way, the Smyths said it's 'In Stock' in the Sligo store but probably not that reliable).

I'm sure most of these questions have been touched on at one point or another. Might be worth thinking of a Wii FAQ Sticky for people considering buying the console.

    1. Is it true that the Wii will only play Divx / Xvid media when re-encoded with particular software available online?
    2. Any chance of seeing DVD playback on a non-DVD enabled Wii anything soon? Surely just a matter of a mod-chip and the right codecs.
    3. Does the Wii come with the WiiSports game (for approx €269)? Some sites says it does come bundled with it.

Will think of more questions later but that'll do for now.

Yes it does. Btw it's only €249 if you can get it in argos.

Cheers for that Muck. Had a read of a few FAQ's online and found out a few things i didn't realise.

No DD5.1 sound and no built-in hard disk?! Me not impressed! :(

You will be once you try it. I'm really looking forward to Metroid coming out on this

Suppose but i don't want two consoles clustering up my sitting room... want to keep the media capabilities of my XBOX but it's clear the Wii suffers in that department.

Will mull it over a bit more even so.

Presuming that your talking about a modded xbox, none of the next gen consoles come close yet(and may never)to what it can do. Mine still resides under my tv and will do for a long time.

If you're worried about clutter don't be, the thing is tiny. As far as media centre capabilitys go, if you're prepared to have a bit of a fiddle about on your computer you can install this http://wmc.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/WiiCR, however I haven't managed to get it working yet. Alternativly you can use this, http://www.orb.com/ which is a breeze to set up. Essentially both of these stream any media files from your computer using the browser for the wii.

Worth buying but it has a few flaws, its not a media centre and isnt designed to be one. It may be hacked to do it via streaming but its a games console. I have 7 games for mine now and between me kids and mates we all nearly hitting pro on Sports, scores of 30ish on Wario, Play gets old fast, Rabbids is designed for beer, Zelda is just amazing but sucks when you finish it. Red Steel is okish but after playing the FPS levels in Rabbids you wonder where it went wrong control wise.

7 games 4 wiimotes 2 nunchuks component cable classic controller, cheap my arse :D

Altho played mario kart64 last night for about 9 hours :D

In Rayman ya can't turn or look up or down though. No problem for on rails shooters, but how long could ya play an on rails shooter before you'd get bored?

One more question.. with regards to the controllers and the whole detecting motion and rotation (a lá playing bowling and golf using life-like controls).. you know what i mean.. just hard to explain it! :D

Does the Wii console, and presumably sensor, need to be at a certain level (e.g at arm level perpendicular to your body)?

Sensor goes either above or below the tv... you can configure this in the settings.

and you can put the console anywhere....

(well as long as the cable for the sensor can reach... :))

Sorry to jump in on your thread.

How many controllers come with the Wii?

The sensor bar on the top/bottom of the telly is only used to tell when the wiimote is pointed at the telly (it sends out 2 IR lights, the front of the Wiimote picks them up and based on whether you said the bar was above or below the telly takes a guess), it's nothing to do with the motion sensing... I don't think. (although, that's the excuse I use when I don't bowl a 300... Sensor bar must be on the blink, honey!). I'll have to experiment on WiiBowling to be sure...

Yeah Banjo is correct. There are also reports of people being able to replace the censor bar with two candles at similar distance above the tv (lit candles) or any other two lights placed at the same distance apart as the sensor bar.
