So, I got A Scanner Darkly on DVD the other day, and to my amazement, when I opened it up there was a leaflet that said on it:
Thank you for doing the right thing by buying this genuine DVD.

Wow, instead of being bombarded with slogans about how piracy is a crime, I'm actually being thanked for once. :)

This makes a very refreshing change, seeing as it normally feels like someone who actually buys the movie essentially gets punished with all these warnings, almost insinuating that you're going to commit a crime by just buying the DVD, and most of the time such warnings are completely unskippable, so you've no choice in the matter.

If there's one thing to encourage someone to download a movie, it's being able to avoid all these warnings that take a few minutes before you can even watch the film. I bought this DVD, meaning that I payed for it, and did not steal it, therefor I do not need to be dictated to that stealing is a crime.

I hope this marks a change for DVDs, as constant warnings do impede the enjoyment of a DVD.

Cool, remember when renting videos years ago the chap who used to come on before the film started to talk about piracy. This is a nice change. :)

i remember that, i think coca cola used to sponsor it for a while too! I remember watching ghostbusters on vhs and some nerd with glasses came on giving us a lecture and wrapped up by saying, "now sit back, open a coke, and enjoy the film"!!!

they've actually been putting those leaflets into dvd's for a while now. they still put that stupid "piracy is a crime" ad on there though. they piss me off beyond all belief. i bought the DVD, i'm aware piracy is a crime... leave me alone! :(

This message has been brought to you by Karl Hungus and the letter 'A'

    :D

PS - bought a lot of DVD's lately and haven't got any of those leaflets but agree it's a bold step in the right direction by the manufacturers / distributors.

got one of these in "superman returns" as well, yellow with black writing if i remember correctly. yeah it is nice from the rampant "you will burn in hell and end the industry!" type rants, and i agree with others about the adds that always preceed any new DVD now. ironic thing is the things are on the pirates as well :D

That is great. Everytime a DVD I've purchased has an unskippable piracy warning I think "I wish I had downloaded this, so I wouldn't have to put up with this crap". There's a terrible tendancy for anti-piracy measures to harm (or at least annoy) legitimate customers.

A pirate movie I watched recently had one of these ads on it ("you wouldn't steal a car, why steal a movie" etc type one), but over this they had subtitled various facts about the industry, such as the lack of downturn in box office and home movie sales even with the rise of internet piracy, but also the sharp rise in sales of (in particular) DVDs and CDs since people became able to try before they buy! I lolled.

    I hate piracy warnings

It's bad enough when you go to the cinema and you get the over dramatic internet piracy is wrong ad, but sitting through sh*te and trailers before a film in the cinema is tradition. However I bought the family guy season 5 box set recently and the stupid bloody ad is on that too. I paid €25 to enjoy the dvds and there's bloody annoying piracy ads on it. I don't know if this is common place, I don't buy many new release dvds.

Thought the exact same thing as the op, I went ahead and did the right thing by buying a genuine dvd and I have to go ahead and watch a stupid bloody piracy ad anyway, I was being punished for it. Obviously it wouldn't be all that much better if I had to sit through a 30 second ad of somebody thanking me for buying a genuine dvd. No ads at all please.

Yeah the piracy leaflets piss me off, got a three dvd set recently with four piracy leaflets included. Nice to hear some say thank you instead, but really wish they'd just shut up, if i buy something i don't want adverts. At least change the advert every now and then to make it interesting, it's just cheap of them to use the same old ad
