In the worlds present political climate I'm disappointed not to see any defence from suicide bombers!!!..

I love these things, common sense and contradictory all at once. "Be aware of your surroundings... and read a book!"

Also, is John Brawn on every newspaper columnist's speed dial or what?

Reminds me of The Office were David Brent is getting interviewed by the Inside Paper magazine and instead of answering questions normally he's answers in a way he'd want the article to be written

"David Brent starred nonchalantly for a moment before answering..."

Not an actual quote but something like that.

"Brent mused..." LOL! I know everybody probably says this but I had a boss like that.

    It's a bit silly alright...

.... he's talking about on public transport... I've found my book or mp3 player especially useful self defence on long flights sitting beside someone whos trying to bend my ear... they give up when you look engrossed in the book or put your earphones back in.

Peripheral vision is a wonderful thing!

Macon from the Accidental Tourist (great book) used this trick all the time, it worked really well... and after years of traveling he had never gotten past the first few pages :)

As for eye contact.... on my first visit to Boston years ago, a handcuffed guy was interviewed after he stabbed a perfect stranger to death on the T. When asked why he did, he said 'He looked at me'. Turned out he'd had a really bad day and was looking for anyone to take it out on.

Eye contact with a stranger can be an invitation for them to come closer!

Didn't John Brawn post here last year and get torn to shreds by you guys??

I understand that... But reading a book will definitely impair your awareness, despite your peripheral vision. I don't think it's wise myself especially late at night.

Earphones are great, as you can still see all your surroundings. And as you said, it discourages having to listen to pointless banter from pissed up eejits you don't know.

But walking with them down a dark alleyway is a different story...

I doubt that was actually him. He referred to himself in the third person. Stuff like "John Brawn says that John Brawn is teaching a course" so I'd say it was someone who works for him or something. I had a chat on the phone about something last year and he seemed like a nice bloke, I was just referring to the fact that he seems to be the person journalists call when they want a quote from a self defence guy.

    Thats marketing for ya!

I'd say he spent alot on getting his name attached to "self" "defence" "ireland" on search engines?

Much like the Krav guys here also.

John Brawn is 110%... nice bloke. met him on a few NLP courses. good instructor, and his Punching DVDs is excellent, if you want to get a bit more KO into your punches.

If your in any business, be in martial arts, or what ever else, you should get your name out, and get as much PR as possible. I've done it myself for other biz I been involved in in the past.

No different that plugging MA classes, seminars or fight promotions on here etc.

Though I had some questions John did not answer for me last year, I do acknowledge his work and marketing.

I mean pretending to read a book.... or listening to music on low.... and only on public transport so nut jobs leave you alone!

I see what you are saying... but personally I wouldn't want to be pretending to read a book for a prolonged period of time. I prefer the earphone option, and just looking out the window.

    But that's just me...

    Cheers,

    R.

    true

a friend of mine met his long time g/f this way. a casual glance on a train...leading to eye contact...leading to 6yrs together

thankfully she wasn't so terrified as to not be able to make eye contact with another human or maybe they'd have never met

just another side of the coin :)

Speaking of the other side of coins...

I've talk to John Brawn on a number of occassion, and is a very sound guy. Always found him to be very open, honest, friendly and has a wealth of knowledge, which he willing to share. I seen his Punch dvd and has lots of good basic tips for developing power. We hope at some time in near future to work together to put on a seminar in Dublin.

I've talked to J. Brawn a few times over the phone, and he's always been very pleasant.

And like Silat Liam said, he's very generous with his knowledge.

    terrified

    why would anyone be terrified???

I have a good friend and he travels up north twice a week by train... he adores women and always has conversations with them while hes travelling... any woman whos luckily enough to meet him will remember the journey and leave with a beaming smile on her face... he has a nack of making people happy :D

I also have a friend whos eyes met with a well dressed handsome stranger on the dart, they started talking and ended up going for a drink. She decided to go back to his place... he attacked her as soon as they got there, she was so badly injured, she's blind in one eye and she'll never have kids, she's 18.

IMO women should be wary of strangers when they are travelling alone not paranoid... rapists are predators... masters of deception.

Getting slightly back on topic, i would disagree with the earphones approach. Needlessly losing a sense is never exactly a good thing in said situations (unless the sense of smell for the fitelink) I'd sit near the driver and keep my wits about me. My journey is only 10 mins on the bus though:D . That said if you're beefy/look tough you won't have a problem anyway!

*edit* unless you have the earphones on low/silent... ( just reread the posts there...)

The good thing about earphones - besides the fact you can listen to cool music on sh*te public transport. Is that you can always tun 'em off if you think you are getting scoped out but still pretend to be engrossed in your tunes. That said I don't really get into trouble anyway, so I listen to them on full blast.

poor girl, i hope she can get over it and trust someone again

an attack like this is IMPOSSIBLE to avoid regardless of training...if someone is set to do something like this NO amount of 'code red' awareness can help you...unless you are going to go through the rest of your life never trusting someone at any stage.
