Is it just me or are films opening in Dublin weeks before they make it to the country?

Babel is my case in point. Im sure it is going to get a general release ebcause of its stars and director BUT there is no sign of it playing Portlaoise, Kilkenny or when I looked Killarney. It has been knocking around Dublin for a week or so though.

Does anyone know about this or have other examples?

if thats true, it's f'in ridiculous, we wait long enough in this country to get Movies after the states we shouldn't be practicing the same half arsed delay techniques on our own people.

If there aren't enough copies of the film to go around it stands to reason it will hit the largest audience first, the largest audience being the places with the largest populations. Babel will likely get a wider release now that it's got a few oscar nods, but it isn't anything sinister, it's just business. Prints of films and their transport, don't come cheap.

What's happening with the role out of digital cinema in Ireland? I remember hearing a while ago that Ireland was going to be one of the first nations to test the technology due to it being a small country with a large cinema going population. This would resolve the limited film prints problem whenever it happens but how far down the road is it likely to happen?

It might resolve distribution but at what cost? I'd rather actually get to see a 35mm film if going to bother going to the cinema.

it was my understanding that this will be fixed.
Was there not a topic recently called "the government finally did something right"

It was about how our government was paying or giving some money twards ireland's cinemas being converted to HD and all movies would be streamed via satalite to 53 (that right?) 53? Irish cinemas that are scheduled for conversion to HD satalite cinemas
