Please note this appears as yet to be willful speculation but thats not to say there is no truth to it

remember this is the man that predicted ITV FTA

    see below link

these could be exciting times ahead

if you read the thread you linked to the op points out that the ftv card rumour has no connection to bigpaddy2004

Wouldnt pay much heed to that tread on digitalspy. Just pure speculation. All coming from the line "And something totally free for 6 months"

This something will probably be "A 2 mix pack free for 6 months" Similar to the present offer in the UK where Sky are currently giving out a 12 month 2 mix pack "free" for 12 months, All you have to do is pay £120.00 for equipment and installation, plus sign a subscription contract of course, Which Sky hope you will not cancel after 12 months.

Sky 1 and 2 on an Irish FTV card??, I would be VERY suprised if this were true.

point taken, but certainly it would make since for sky to apply a ftv system to just 4 terrestrial channels well before dtt comes in (which it inevitably will) to become so established it makes viewers hard to change over.

Sky 1 will never ever be available fta or ftv anywhere at any time ever (just a personal opinion)

Sky are in it to make money. Having RTE FTV instead of as part of a subscription is not a way of making money. And RTE definitely don't have the finances to pay Sky the ludicrous amounts of money needed for FTV system.

    givecredit's theory is more plausible.

firstly, as far as I can see RTE/TV3 couldnt really care less about weather they are FTA/FTV/encrypted. They dont seem to hyave much of an interest in providing digital TV free to The Irish public. Does their encryption revenue outweigh the cost of encryption in the first place if they are indeed recieving any?

Secondly, I think it is worth sky's while to try to encroch every living room they can. An irish FTV system would allow they to advertise to /influence / intoduce other services ( Broadband) to another target audience

The deal RTE have with Sky is to provide Sky with RTE free, and Sky can charge what they like for it. RTE regard it as NTL cable by wireless.

RTE have no say and don't get a penny!

RTE pay nothing to be encrypted at the moment, as part of their deal with Sky. The only real reason they're on Sky.

Lets not paint Sky in an overly altruistic brush, they know full well that having Pat Kenny and his Donnybrook friends on air is a big selling point in our little island.

why dont sky put RTE 1/2 on the english EPG with the same deal as c4 here? (i.e . blocking programs that have rights issues?) Would RTE not get increased revenue from advertising and be all for it?
