Instaliing Windows XP + boot from cd trouble

Following on from this thread I've managed to obtain a copy of Windows XP. When I tried to install it basically said the one already on my computer is newer than the cd version and to continue I need to reboot from cd.

This is where it gets tricky. I have a flickering screen which isn't always so bad depending on the background and text. In the setup screen however the text is mostly jibberish. The blue bar at the top is ok, and I can read clearly that I'm on page 1 of 7. The rest of the text over the black background is not so clear with various letters and numbers omitted amidst random flickering.

So basically, is there anyway someone can tell me exactly what keys to hit that will change the settings to boot from cd? Or is there a cable I can get for my laptop to connect to my tv for a clearer picture that would be easier?

Any help much appreciated as always, thanks.

You need to get to your BIOS settings at bootup (F2, DEL or something else to enter setup normally who show up) and then change the boot sequence with the CDROM first (I think).

Yeah sorry I got that far, but then where do I go from? How do I change the settings without being able to read what's in front of me?

i would say get a new screen! try jumbletown.ie - always people giving away CRT monitors there, that should sort you out.

Thanks, that might be of some use if I can get past changing the boot sequence...

Anyway, I'll probably just try to pick up something in the morning to connect my laptop to a tv monitor cos I'm running out of time to do this before I go away.
