I am thinking of buying one of these to provide a back up store primarily for music and picture files.
Can anyone advise where the best value is to be had to purchase one.

Have a 320GB WD MyBook myself. No problems with it, pretty quick with the USB2 connection.

Have one the same as aidan except it is the 250GB model, works great. Check your local PC World also, they sometimes have good deals on external hard drives.

I'm looking to get an external HDD also (used to have one but sold it). It was well handy and I could bring it with me anywhere I wanted (work to watch movies for example :p ).

But I think I'm going to wait before I buy anything cos (apparently) eSATA will become available to the masses soon, for cheap.

I shopped around a bit last week and picked up a 300GB Iomega External Hard Drive (Hi-Speed USB 2.0, 7,200rpm) in Harvey Norman (Swords) for €99 last Sunday. I reckon it is a now a discontinued model drive, but for €99 it can't be bad value (they had a few of them). I found it plug and play with fast access times, on both my mac and PC, so overall I have no complaints.

The Iomega name is good (apart from the click of death zip drives) so the Iomega deal with 50Gb more storage looked better than similar offers from pcworld (250Gb €129).

You could consider newer tech like the triple connect types (FireWire 800/FireWire 400/USB 2.0 eSATA/USB 2.0) but you may pay a lot more. In which case you will have to justify the extra expense for anything above a USB2.00 connection.....

Mind you, I remember paying £200 for a single 40Mb Syquest cartridge ten years ago....

I was checking Komplett and Peats where they seem to be selling these for around 115/119.

I have never used one before, it is just a matter of plugging one in to the usb connection and copy/paste ?

Yep. Plug it in and it registers as a drive in My Computer, and away you go.

They also need an external power supply ... which is why I ended up getting the passport model that is powered via USB .. but pricier and doesn't hold as much ...
