A group of us girls are planning on heading to Achill for St Patricks weekend. We are thinking about renting a cottage and going self catering. Any recommendations on where to eat, good pubs and anything that we shouldnt miss. In particular good walks to clear the head after a night out.

Head for keel bay. Follow the road as far as you can and it will bring you to the end of the world. Just a mountain with a beautiful beach and the atlantic. You can rent surfboards there and I think there is an outdoor adventure centre there aswell if you need instruction. We stayed in a place called "Forest something" - cannot remember - it is a rambling old mansion with hostel like accomodation. Heating was not working as it was being done up but there were plenty of old fireplaces blazing in the large drawing rooms. The cooking facilities were very good but the shopping facilities on Achill are desperate. It has a lovely old pub attached to it with impromptu trad sessions and plenty of characters. Lot of the staff are blow-ins who fell in love with the place. Lots of atmosphere and crack. The weekend we were there the staff were having a chocolate making competition (Swiss vs Belgium. Yummy.) and we got to test the results. Have fun.

I'm pretty sure you mean Keem bay (pronounced Kim bay). Keel beach is quite nice but nothing compared to Keem :)

Keel, keem. Visit both! You are right though. One is quite spectacular. That hostel was called the "valley" something.

The Annex Inn is good craic in the summer. And the imaginatively named "Pub". Be warned, it's very straggly. No real village at either Doogary or Dooagh, or anywhere apart from maybe Achill Sound. It's a bit of a walk to go anywhere. If the weathers good, take the time to walk to the old coast guard lookout on the clifftops over Keem bay. It's spectacular. One of my favourite places in the world.
