A friend is looking at buying 2004 Honda Civic 1.6. Looks like a very nice car but apparently the CV joints will need to be replaced soon.

Does anyone have any idea who much this will cost roughly?

What mileage is on the car??
They shouldn't need replacing early on in their life!! Alot of the older 94-96 are only getting done now!! It all depends on how the car was driven etc aswell!!

What jonny said. Unless there's at least 70k/80k miles on it, I wouldn't expect the CV joints needed replacing. As for costs, is he going to a main dealer or to his local mechanic?

Hmm, there is only like 35k on the clock.
Does that sound a bit dogey then?

It could be that the person selling the car is just saying that the CV joints would be a concern in the future as they are prone to going on hondas. If the CV joints need immediate replacing then there is something seriously wrong!!

To answer you question OP, it will be around 90e-120e each excluding labour from a motor factors. Then get a local mechaninc to fit them for about 100-150

Last time I did a CVJ they were 60 euro each. The time before they were 70 euro (there must have been a decrease in world demand for CV joints since).

No-one seems to know that the rubber gators (aka boots) on the joints need simple maintenance: clean and spray with silicone once or twice a year to prevent from perishing. The gators will last a lifetime if this is done.

CVJs on Hondas are no more prone to wearing out than any other make: The gators don't get looked after and burst, letting grease out and dirt and water in. This eventually damages the joint.

Check the gators. They should be fine for years more on a 2004 even without being looked after.

Check the CVJs. No clicking on full lock - left and right - when driving then no problem.
