Summer work for college student

    Hi,

This is my 2nd year in college and I want to start job hunting for summer work early as the last 2 years I've had horrible jobs. I'm doing a computer science course so I'd like to go into something to do with that if possible. I'm just wondering when I should start applying and what kind of places would take on students for the summer (ie. Intel?)?

Any info welcome as getting a summer job isn't as easy as some people like to think. :)

    Thanks!

Do it now. You aren't early - the deadline for summer placements close between now and the next 6 weeks.

The summer gone by I worked in a cinema and it was the best summer of my life, I must say! All young people, mainly students, wierd hours which cater for lots of parties and mid-week drinking (cos you're not always in at 9am)... work slightly strenuous/annoying I suppose, but you're usually having too much of a laugh to care! Plus you get to see films before everyone else, and you get free tickets for your mates :)

Made some great friends there and was pally with 95% of the people there (maybe 40-50 employees).

    Go for it!

But maybe you're looking for something more technical (you mentioned Intel), in which case I can't help you! :D

I know this sounds stupid but this is the only place I can really as these questions, who should I apply to and how (e-mail, post...)?

DaveMcG - Good suggestion. Bare in mind that I spent my first summer working as a kitchen porter, anything is better than that. :) Do you apply for things like Cinema work now though?

Obviously I'd like to work in anything that'll look good on my CV when I'm applying for IT jobs in a couple of years. If those kind of jobs are hard to come by somewhere like the cinema would have to do (if I could actually get it that is). All I'm really looking for is any IT companies that would take on students. The reason I mention Intel is because my mother keeps pushing me to apply there but I don't even know if they take students for summer work.

    totallyclueless

Nah it's quite early to be applying for a cinema now I think. I think I handed in a CV in May and they happened to be doing interviews within a few days of me handing it in, so that was handy. I'd say late April or early May would be grand if you're looking for work for June, July and August. Just hand in a CV to anyone (preferably a manager) and on your cover letter mention you're looking for summer work. They'll be taking people on for the summer cos everyone is off school, college, etc., so it gets very busy.

It won't stick out for an IT company I don't think, but if you can't get a job in that area then I'd recommend a cinema! :D

Actually I'd go with DaveMcG. Get a real student job. Doing techy work is grand and all that for your CV thats about it. 3 months you learn a good bit, but you're in the office. While you aren't really accountable you cant just **** off and take the day out.

But if you are set on getting a IT type job goto the big companies webistes, career sections and look for summer internships.

BT Ireland, Cisco Systems, Intel , Pfizer and Citigroup (London) do Summer internships for undergraduates. There are more, but I can't think of any immediate examples. The deadlines for most are at the end of January (yes, you have two days to apply, if you're a day late you'll be ok though). BT Ireland is an online application. For the rest, get on the phone and get the e-mail adress of the relevent HR people so you can send in your CV and cover letter. From what I hear, lots of these companies are actually having a hard time filling their intern positions so you'll have a good chance at getting a job.

Apply ASAP, Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Most companies in London do summer internships. They are pretty competitive but definetly good experience.
