I got a phising attack in the post today. It's kind of a testament to how much personal information they can collect* on you, but they still managed to get my first name wrong. They didn't give a bank account number for their fake direct debit form. They gave an address in Jersey but I doubt that can be traced. I wonder how many people will be fooled. Must be a lot if it's worth their while to post god knows how many of these from England.

*There's one 'dating' website that keeps sending pictures of hot women who want to have my babies in Midleton. I don't live in Midleton, but it's pretty damn close.

Its interesting to see how these things happen. I once accidentally spelled my name incorrectly when I was buying concert tickets somewhere. I started getting loads of junk mail from similar businesses soon after with the same incorrect name. So I knew who to blame. Those bastids!

They think that because of the IP address of your computer. The fact that they thought you were in Midleton probably means that some guy from Midleton signed up to their kinky service using his real address and because your IP addresses were so similar, they think thats where you are.

Yep. It's all a scam. There are no hot women in Midleton or Waterford City.

Lol, thats exactly what I thought the moment I read the OP.

Well, there might be one, at a push two...but certainly not enough to be signing up in their masses to the kinky sites, ready for some hot action from the "studs" (who happen to be using dating sites...) of Midleton and Waterford...

Speaking of phishing alerts, I recently got one sent to my email which almost fooled me. Was from "Ebay", very authentic looking, asking that I respond to a buyer/sellers question. Hadn't used Ebay in ages so thought it was a bit suspicious, but it tried to have me sign in to "reply" to this question through a re-directed link so knew what it was at, but I'd suspect quite a few would be fooled by it.

Don't get spam via snail mail though, nor have I had any sort of phishing attempts. Except the obvious ones of "You have just won €400,000! Please fill in your details to accept this mega-prize!".

How to trace where your letters are coming from

When you give your email address to a website, you hope that they don't sell or trade your address to a bunch of spammers. Well if they do, here is a simple way to see what sites are responsible for what particular piece of email. This requires you have a Gmail account.

If your Gmail login name was username@gmail.com and you went to samplesite.com to fill out a registration form, instead of just entering username@gmail.com as your email, enter it as username+samplesitecom@gmail.com instead. When Gmail sees a "+" in an email address, it uses all the characters to the left of the plus sign to know who to send it to. In this example it would still send it to username@gmail.com.

Now whats cool is if you search Gmail for username+samplesitecom, you will see all massages that were sent to that email address.

To see who is responsible for sending a specific message click the Show Details link and you will see the complete address.

    Neat! :D
