Thought I would do a new thread on this as the old one was a bit long and a lot of information incorrect. Here is what I have found.

    1. Contacted CitizenInformation (previously Oasis). Here is the information I got.
If your car is no longer on the road then you should ensure that you have
registered this fact with the vehicle registration department of your local
authority (contact details below). They may ask for proof that the car is
no longer on the road i.e.documentation that it has been scrapped.

Indeed some local authorities insist on the car being scrapped in a
recognised scrap yard. You will then be asked to return your vehicle
    registration certificate.

You will also need to contact your local motor tax office. They may ask
you for proof that your vehicle is no longer on the road. You will then
need to return your tax disc. As you have more than three months tax left
on your vehicle you will be able to get a refund.

    2. I contacted them by phone and asked them where I actually get the car scrapped. They said that you should contact the local dealer of the cars in question.

    3. Using www.carzone.ie I looked up the dealers of my car and rang the local one. They gave me the name of a local scrapyard that recycle cars.

    4. In searching for their address online I came across this website.

    http://www.vrn.ie/pages/page2.html

This lists all the registered scrapyards that deal with recycling cars.

    Hope this helps! :)

There was a full page ad in one of yesterdaqy newspapers, by SIMI I think, listing a number of locations that you can bring you end of life car for recycling FREE OF CHARGE. The motor industry has already paid €3m + for this facility.

Now there is no need for cars to be dumped at the side of the road.
