One of my good friends is heading off travelling for a year and i want to get him something was thinking about either a good quality backpack, ipod or digital camera, or something else. i was worried that he might loose something like the ipod or digital camera because he is doing the whole thialand, etc... thing

please do not move this to the gifts forum as i would like to get ideas from people who have travelled like this as they would know what would be a really useful thing to get

travel pillow, money belt, travel speakers, ipod (come on, you could lose one on any old bus, don't make Thailand etc out to be the bad people), pack of cards, travel diary, small torch, camera, spare camera battery, spare memory card for camera, travel towel, random phone credit every month or so, good book, adapters, passport cover (a passport can easily get ruined), inner sheet, sarong, hat, sunglasses.

Re the backpack - do you mean like a travel pack/rucksack thing? If so they're personal and should be bought by the person who will be carrying it to ensure comfort. Day packs usually come with a travel pack/rucksack.

I definately agree with the fact that the person going travelling should pick their own backpack.

Best presents I got before I came travelling were
    1) travel pillow
    2) guide book
    3) australian dollars
    4) address book
    5) photo album which I obviously didn't bring with me but it's at home waiting to be filled.

I would have liked either a digital camera or an ipod but I didn't get them. If you are getting a digital camera try & get an idea of what he wants in a camera. 2 friends of mine hate the ones they were given & would have preferred to be able to pick out their own. Bear in mind that he will be able to pick either of these up relatively cheap in Asia.

Where is he going? If he's going to be in a country that does Red Letter Days you could get him one of those, something like diving, zorbing, parachute jump for example, something that he'd never do at home, will probably want to do and are quite expensive on a backpacker budget.

If you end up getting an el cheapo digital camera then, a usb memory stick or some sort of small memory storage that can be used to put pictures on then bring to an internet cafe or whatever to send some to his mates/family/whoever else.
