Dodgy router or is it the neighbours?

I've been asked by a friend to help her out with her wifi internet connection.

It was working fine up until around xmas when the wifi signal just was there anymore, couldn't see it (the laptop was about 2 metres from the router).

Rebooted the router, the connection still not there, connected a cable and changed the channel until I found one that worked (which was in fact the same channel as before!), all the other's didn't work or we couldn't pick them up anyway.

Same issue keeps happening pretty much every day or other day since, either a reboot fixes it or changing the channel and changing it back fixes it, or it just fixes itself after a couple of hours.

I'm not sure what the hell is going on, whether it's the neighbours wifi or cordless phones interfering or the router's past it's sell by date - the dsl router is one of those Zyxel that came with BT broadband.

I'm thinking about telling her to just get a new router, but will that solve the problem? Any other suggestions or ideas welcome!

Try a hard reset, ie, get a paper clip and keep the reset button pressed in for 30secs.

Ensure you have your PPPoE settings, VPI:, 8. VCI:, 35, DSL username and password etc etc. Then, enable wifi with no security to start off with.

I had to reset it with a paper clip when I initally looked at it a few weeks back as herself couldn't remember the password to the router.

There's no security on it at present, and all settings are as per BT helpdesk.
