Your top 5 DS Games?

    Here's mine:

    1. Elite Beat Agents / Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan: I know this is two games really, but its the same experience more or less. Utterly original concept, and from my experience the best example of the Rythmn Action genre. The difficulty curve is very well executed, so a total newbie to the game can learn on the easy level and build up to tougher levels. I can't remember how many time I replayed the final level on Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan, trying to beat it on hard. I never felt like giving up though, it was compelling despite the difficulty.

    2. Advance Wars: Dual Strike: My only problem with this game is its length, even though it wasn't particularly short, I still wanted sooo much more. Its a simple yet deep turn based strategy game. Its extremely addictive and very satisfying when you win. I wish they'd release a sequel. C'mon! C'mon!

    3. Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime: Normally, I wouldn't even pay a bit of notice to a game with a silly name like that, and the cartoony box art really strikes of this is a kids game made by Nickelodeon. In some ways it is kid friendly, but it is also very compelling, very charming and funny. I guess, one could draw similarities to some of the 2D Zelda games, but it is never as challenging as some of the puzzles in those games. Yet it remains entertaining, and the tank battles and dialogue break up the gameplay well.

    4. New Super Mario Bros:
Ok, this is an obvious choice. Its and example of perfectly polished simple gameplay. It is, however, far too short for my liking. I really did breeze through this game, but I enjoyed every minute of it.

    5. Trauma Center: I was a little unsure for the last title in my list, it was between Trauma Center, Phoenix Wright, Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow and Meteos. There wasn't really much gameplay in Phoenix Wright, I got lost and stuck in Castlevania and Meteos destroys touch screens (thank god I used a screen protector), so I went with Trauma Center. I don't think anyone conceived that an operating theatre based game would turn out so well. It has to be applauded for its originality and execution. The story is fairly lame, but the gameplay is solid as a rock.

    Nice idea!

    1. Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow. I think this is the best of the GBA/DS Castlevania games, and I absolutely loved it (Portrait of Ruin was good, but not as good)

    2. Dragon Quest Heroes Rocket Slime. Snap. Loved this game too, played it from start to finish in a weekend, and completely fell in love with it. Great game.

    3. Mario and Luigi Partners in Time. Huge game, very funny, and hugely addictive.

    4. New SMB. Its Mario. Its a bit easy, but it was excellent all the same. I'd love if they stuck a "hard" mode in there and curbed the number of lives you could get, but maybe they'll do that for NSMB2 (I can dream, can't I?).

    5. Kirby Canvas Curse. I have fond memories of this game, because it was the first REALLY good game I got that made great use of the stylus. Must play through it again soon.... the coin challenges ensure that it will stay in your DS for hours/days/weeks after you've finished the main game. Brilliant stuff.

    In no particular order

1 - Castlevania DoS (the reason I've had 4 hours sleep the last 4 days)

2 - New Super Mario Bros (classic but brilliant)

3 - Advance Wars Dual Strike

4 - Sonic Rush (the dual screen play takes a while to get used to though)

    [EDIT]
5 - Mario Kart ... how could I forget that! This is worse than Jen Andreson forgetting to thank Brad Pitt at some awards show
    [/EDIT]

Elite Beat Agents (only just got it so might still be honeymooning...)
    Castlevania DoS
    Animal Crossing
    Mariokart
Rub Rabbits (it's so stupid but so very addictive)

The latest issue of GamesTM arrived in the post yesterday (Metroid 20th Anniversary Issue) - they did their top 10 DS games. Number one was Meteos. Ouendan and EBA were in the top ten as seaparate entries, and Advance Wars was nowhere to be seen.

I don't get the obsession with Meteos - I think its fun, but incredibly overrated.

Its a good game, my biggest problem is that it is harsh on the touch screen, I don't like having to replace my screen protector very often.

    1. Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan - just got this yesterday but have been blown away by it. It is extremely difficult but rewards practice. My eyes are seeing circles after playing it!
    2. Phoenix Wright - A refreshing and unique game, which for me, was a revolution in hand-held gaming. Like nothing else, and worth buying a DS for (sequel sitting upstairs waiting to be played)
    3. Mario Kart DS - of the many Mario titles already on DS, this is the most addictive and deep. Perfectly balanced racer.
    4. NSMB - So old school it occasionally hurts. Excellent.
    5. Mario 64 DS - as you can guess, I havent that many DS games, but since I never got this game first time around, I was delighted to be able to experience this close to perfect game.

If there is one thing that annoys me about Pheonix Wright is that it isn't that unique at all. There are hundreds of excellent text based adventures released in Japan that never come out over here. Publishers thought that they won't sell over here. Same as what they thought about RPGs until Final Fantasy VII. Well done capcom for taking a chance that paid off. Now Konami lets see a DS Suikogaiden compilation.

Its unique I guess that it was translated into english. Personally speaking, I'm not sure how much of a "game" it is really. Also in a courtroom / investigation type game, logic has to be the cornerstone, in PW though a lot of the time it was guesswork, or showing everything you have to every person. I got bored quickly of that. I'm hoping Hotel Dusk will provide a more rounded experience.

    Off Topic:

Also noticed on Games TM yesterday that Mother 3 is down as an essential GBA game, which is really odd, seeing as how it is heavily text based and only in Japanese. I think there were musings we might see a Mother 1/2/3 compilation on the DS at some stage. Who knows.

At the moment it's like this-

    1. Phoenix Wright
    2. Metroid Prime Hunters
    3. Feel the magic
    4. Mario Kart

I'm not fond of most of the other games I have (Animal Crossing, Sonic Rush, Castlevania), so those are the only 4 I think are worth including.

Been playing Shining Force GBA alot too.

Nintendo had a release date that has since been pulled. Also it emerged recently that nintendo hadn't even begun translating it. So it's doubtful. However the series is so popular that there are various translation projects working on it. Praise the lord for the intraweb. Must get round to the Mother series after Phantasy Star 1-4. Heard Mother 2/Earthbound is exceptional and similar things about the other 2 games.

I thought Mario v DK 2 was over way too quickly to recommend it. It's great fun while it lasts but it rarely took more than a couple of goes to beat a level, and the levels only took a minute or so to complete with full chains and no stopping. A couple of long train journeys and all you have left is the multiplayer...

TRUE, and definatley not worth the price we are charged here in ireland,
nevertheless , DS is a hand held and id rather have a go at that on the short[ist] train journey, rather than a final fantasy battle..

While i had fun with meteos I found it very easy to get out of trouble by just wildly rubbing the screen and youll get lucky

Thats true but at higher difficulty levels that won't help you. Also a half decent Meteos player will always beat a 'rubber'. I never use it myself. I find massive combos are more reliable and don't land you back in trouble.

Some oldies in here but are classics non the less.

    No particular order.
    • Tetris DS: Hmmm.....Tetris. FACT! Tetris is good for your brain!

    • Metroid Prime: Hunters: I was pretty good (Read: Excellent :P) at this online so that is probably why I hold this game in such high regard.

    • Elite Beat Agents: I played this before I got my hands on the Japenese counter part. I have to say thought that I enjoyed this version more than the Japanese version. I like the songs though a lot of people complained.

    • Mario Kart: My first online experience (EVER)_ that I care to remember. I was also pretty good (READ: Excellent :P) at this aswell online.

    • Animal Crossing: Wild World: Admittedly I don't play this game anymore but I loved this game soo much.I played it for about an hour every day for ages and I just loved the charm and quantness of the whole game.

I did not like some of the bigger titles which people hold in such high regard. I disliked Advance Wars: Dual Strike, Castlevania: DoS are just a few examples..

It's very similar to past Mario Karts, except Super Mario Kart on the SNES, which handles quite a bit differently. There's even a nice selection of tracks from the older games.

    Anyway. I like:

    1) Ouendan!
    2) Meteos
    3) Phoenix Wright
    4) Kirby Canvas Curse
    5) That girl over there with purple hair

And there I was thinking it to be some kind of perverted hentai game.

I'm absolutely loving Elite Beat Agents. Only got it yesterday.
