Was reading about NHS proposing to use Afghan poppy supplies to help in its shortages with diamorphine. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/6287975.stm Just curious, is there a difference or is morphine a shortened vernacular term?

Diamorphine is just another name for Heroin. Or acetylated morphine if you like it like it like that.

So there is a difference between morphine and diamorphine?

Yes. Diamorphine is Heroin and morphine is..well..morphine. Where the morphine molecule would have hydroxy groups, the diamorphine has acetyl groups.
