Are Containers Waterproof?

One for the truckers... Just reading about the cargo ship MSC Napoli run aground off England. Seems to be an awful lot of pikey's scavenging what they can. Are those 40ft containers completely waterproof? People are taking nappies and carpets home, as well as BMW motorbikes, exhausts and steering wheels?

Would you buy an item off Ebay that was listed as having come from this ship?

Most containers are not waterproof - they have air vents to stop cargo going musty on long trips. Refrigerated containers would be waterproof (obviously), but the refrigeration unit would have stopped when it lost power.

The odds are the nappies, carpet etc are ruined - the bikes etc, if the salt water is washed off quickly, etc stand some chance...

PS Not a trucker, but my dad worked in the shipping business, and I spent plenty of time around container ships when I was a kid.

The container managed to float from a ship to the beach. This can only mean the container is lighter than water.

Unless the BMW motorbikes are very very light, the containers MUST be watertight.

People actually got the bmw bikes started so that means they are in alright condition. I wouldnt mind spending abit of cash on a free brand new bike thats worth over 15k.

Nappies and carpets etc would most likely be wrapped in plastic so would be ok. Would the bikes be wrapped up in anyway?
